The Center for Workforce Inclusion is recruiting for a Specialist Events Assistant position within the Experience Service Program (ESP) that provides support to the United States Department of the Interior, National Capital Parks-East in Washington, DC.

Role and Responsibilities: This is an exciting opportunity for a year-long internship where you can:

  • Experience a variety of National Park Service Sites that include historic house museums, an aquatic garden, recreational sites, a farm, forts and neighborhood parks.

  • Be an integral part of a dynamic team.
The Special Event Assistant will work with the parks Special Event Manager to help plan and execute a variety of special events and special programs for National Capital Parks-East which is headquartered in Anacostia Park in Washington, DC. This portfolio includes multiple park sites in Washington, DC and Prince Georges County, Maryland such as Anacostia Park, Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, Fort Washington and Oxon Hill Farm. Annual events include the Lotus and Water Lily Festival at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Anacostia Park Late Skates, Mary McLeod Bethunes Birthday Celebration, Campfire programs at Greenbelt and Oxon Hill Farms Eggstravaganza. All park events are planned with interpretive/ educational themes and objectives and are planned to meet NPS accessibility guidelines.

The Special Event Assistant will gain wide ranging experience in this position that will include:
  • Developing events centered on interpretive themes and messages
  • Operational and logistical planning and execution
  • volunteer recruitment and management,
  • creating safety plans,
  • experience in Incident Command,
  • event marketing,
  • budgeting, and tracking expenses
Qualifications and Education Requirements: Successful candidates must meet the age criteria of being 55 years of age or older and eligible to work in the United States; a creative problem solver, demonstrate their ability to work well independently and as part of a team; enjoys working with the public and who can forge strong working relationships with partners, community stakeholders, volunteers and staff working the events; able to prioritize and handle a fast-paced environment is critical; flexible and often takes on different roles to get the job done including event set-up, clean-up, maintenance tasks and willingness to get ones hands dirty. Prior event experience and/or park experience is desirable but not required as you will work with and be mentored by the parks special events manager. Strong candidates for this position should have:
  • excellent organizational skills,
  • outstanding written and verbal communication skills,
  • mastery of the programs in Microsoft Office suite
  • excellent customer service skills and experience working with the public.
  • An ability to coordinate multiple aspects of a project. For events that often includes things such as planning, purchasing, communications, maintenance, operations, etc.

There is a physical aspect to setting up for and working events which will require any candidate to be in reasonably good physical condition. Candidate should be able to lift and least 30 pounds for the physical set up and break down of events. Most of the events will be outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and temperature ranges from very hot in the summer to colder weather. It is also common at most events to be on ones feet for extended period of time at events and to have 10,000 or more steps in a day. Candidates must also possess a valid drivers license and have a good driving record for operating government vehicles.

Hours & Compensation: Part-Time position working 24 hours per week (Tuesdays - Saturdays and will be expected to work extended hours or on holidays as necessary for events.) @ $28.00 per hour; 12-month project.
