Working within the Large Electrolyzer Product team, the Product Safety Engineer is responsible for all aspects related to product design for safety, including review of compliance with product safety codes and standards as well as design for safety-related industry practices. This engineer will work closely with the other product engineers, members from the safety team, as well as other internal and external customers to develop, support and communicate the highest level of understanding and management of the product safety strategy.This position is based in Wallingford, CT. Main tasks and responsibilities Understand

product safety standards and evaluate product designs to ensure the

resultant products are safe, and comply with codes & standards Advise

product engineers on compliance options and impact of design decisions Maintain

engineering documentation to support technical file management Support

assessments by third parties such as U.S. Nationally Recognized Testing

Laboratories (NRTLs), European Notified Bodies (NoBos), or other

certifying agencies for new products and existing product changes Support

customer-facing contract evaluation related to product safety and codes

& standards compliance Support

internal and external risk assessment activities such as HAZOP and FMEA Collaborate

with engineers to complete detailed evaluations related to product safety

and codes & standards compliance related tasks, to include: pressure

equipment design evaluation, hazardous area evaluations, intrinsic safety

evaluations, SIL assignment and verification for functional safety, etc. Key qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent Required Skills and Abilities:

Experience in engineering product or project development

Hydrogen, Oil & Gas, gas/liquid systems preferred; power systems, large machinery, complex controlled systems or equipment also acceptable. Project experience with engineering evaluations for equipment safety or codes & standards compliance acceptable

Experience with a structured design development process (e.g. Stage Gate for products or FEL or similar for projects) Experience with risks assessment such as HAZID, HAZOP, PHA or FMEA. Familiarity with codes and standards review, verification and certification

E.g. ISO and IEC, CE, CSA, NFPA, ASME

Optional Skills (Nel willing to train) Knowledge of safety processes/requirements such as pressure safety (ASME, PED), electrical safety (NFPA 70, EU Low Voltage Directive), machine safety (EN60204, EU Machinery Directive), etc. Familiarity with functional safety design (SIS, SIF, SIL, SRS, SRT) Hazardous area safety experience (NFPA, ATEX, IECEx, IEC60079) Product or project/site approvals or certification from third-party agency/notified body Personal Characteristics and Competencies: Priority Management Attention to Detail/Accuracy Problem Solving and Troubleshooting Skills Communication Critical Evaluation Relationship Management Consultation Ethical Practice The above statements reflect the principal functions of the position and shall not be construed as a detailed description of all work requirements that may be inherent in the job.
