Mental Health Counselor
JOB DESCRIPTION
Gilbert Unified School District

Purpose Statement
The Mental Health Counselor position will work closely with the building administrative team and counseling team to coordinate, facilitate, and implement mental health support services. This position will also work with the district level administrative teams in coordinating consistent support services. The Mental Health Counselor position will provide emotional support and foster a safe and successful learning environment for students the secondary school level. The primary focus will be on building student capacity for academic success and positive social and emotional well-being. Essential Functions
  • Provide individual and/or group mental health counseling support
  • Coordinate and provide prevention education programming and activities relating to: social/emotional wellness, healthy coping strategies, decision-making, substance use prevention, suicide prevention, etc.
  • Coordinate and facilitate restorative practices and resiliency training for staff, students and families
  • Provide consultation to school administrators, behavioral health staff, teachers and parents regarding assessment and intervention plans of students targeted for service
  • Provide crisis intervention supports as appropriate
  • Monitor school attendance of students and provide interventions to improve school attendance
  • Provide direct and indirect mental health support services and outreach activities
  • Liaison to and for community resources: involving short term and/or long term intervention or advocacy
  • Coordinate school programs that address the physical needs of students and their families such as food, clothing, and shelter
  • Liaison to and for families to include prevention education, community outreach and family engagement
  • Active participant on campus Behavioral Health Team
  • Provide staff training and awareness related to trauma informed practices, social emotional wellness strategies, identification and referral resources, identification/intervention/postvention student support practices
  • Maintain and track documentation of mental health support for students
  • Maintain appropriate safeguards to the confidentiality of information as circumstances require
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in counseling and/or social work
  • Experience working with youth 11-18 years of age preferred
  • ADE School Counselor or School Social Work Certification
  • Experience and training in mental health support within a learning or school environment

Experience
Job related experience within specialized field is required.

Education
Master's degree from an accredited educational institution.
