**Key responsibilities**:
- Oversight of the Office of Minority Health, the State Office of Rural Health (SORH), and Office of Faith Based and Community Engagement, reporting to the Deputy Commissioner for Population Health. This office promotes optimal health in Tennessee and is a priority for the Department and the Administration with a particular focus on vulnerable, at risk, and underserved populations.
- Oversight of approximately 40 staff, including state employees and contractors. This position will engage in workforce development and employee engagement for staff, fostering a collegial environment that reflect the mission, vision, and values of the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH).
- Oversight of substantial budgetary responsibility, contracts, and grants to community and clinical entities, and management of federal grants.
- Oversight of substantial community engagement, especially for hard-to-reach communities. This position will be a key partner in strategic planning for TDH and outreach. This division will need to guide the department in the selection, evaluation, and implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies tailored to meet the needs of underserved and rural populations.
- Oversight of public health capacity for community-engaged strategic planning, funding utilization, and integration into the state health plan as well as customer focused goals.
- Representation to local, regional, state, and national groups as requested on topics relevant to division work.
Other duties of the Assistant Commissioner include:
- Strategic planning and execution of health priorities across the state, including priority areas of promoting physical activity, decreasing tobacco use, decreasing obesity, and decreasing substance abuse.
- Guide the division in the selection, evaluation, and implementation of evidence-based prevention strategies that align with the State Health Plan, TDH Strategic Plan, and TDH health equity plan.
**Required experience**:
- Experience with public health and community-based systems, particularly related to minority health, rural health, and faith-based interventions.
- Vision for systems approach to promoting health.
- Leadership experience in community assessment, partnerships, and programs to address social determinants of health and health disparities.
- Experience in management of interdisciplinary teams.
- Experience in communications with media and high-level stakeholders, including governmental and community partners.
