**Job Summary**

Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller for Berrien Springs Public Schools will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the finance department at a unique and innovative school district.

**Duties and Responsibilities**
- Oversee and manage daily accounting functions including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, cash and banking, fixed assets and other transactions, including supervision of assigned staff in those functions.
- Establish and recommend accounting procedures.
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Assure compliance with Board policy and legal requirements and maintain sound business practices that include proper checks and balances.
- Prepare external reports to federal, state, and regional governmental entities.
- Monitor new accounting/regulatory standards and stay well-informed of current accounting rules. Determine impact to financial statements and internal controls. Coordinate the implementation of necessary changes.
- Coordinate and participate in the monthly general ledger close processes including review and approval of staff journal entries and account reconciliations, including bank reconciliations. Ensure the timely completion and accuracy of all closing aspects.
- Assume responsibility for the audit to ensure a timely review of all documents and prepare the annual financial report.
- Assist the Chief Financial Officer in the preparation, development, and monitoring of the district budgets.
- Prepare and analyze financial information for administrative-level decision-making.
- Assists in managing district budget, monitoring line items, and reporting on significant variances.
- Assist the Chief Financial Officer in formulating and recommending changes concerning finance department operations.
- Other duties as assigned by the CFO or his/her designee.

**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration; CPA preferred
- Previous experience in a school or other governmental entity preferred
- Prior knowledge of the Michigan Public School Accounting Manual Bulletin 1022 is preferred
- Skyward software experience preferred
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong analytical skills with an attention to detail
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Dependable, professional, self-directed and self-motivated

Pay: $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
