**Communications Director**

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Director will be an integral part of Aurora’s management team. The Communications Director will lead the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative’s internal and external communications. This role is based in Washington, DC with an expectation of 3 or more days in office per week and up to 20% travel (conferences, events, media engagements, inter-office travel, etc.)

**Responsibilities**

The Director of Communications core responsibilities will include:

- Develop and execute strategic communication plans to enhance AHI’s visibility, reputation, and impact (incl. thought leadership, content, style, and branding).
- Serve as a credible spokesperson for AHI, effectively communicating its mission, goals, and achievements to the media and other external audiences.
- Manage media relations, including drafting press materials, pitching stories to journalists, securing, and coordinating interviews and orchestrating media engagement opportunities remotely and in-person (i.e., press conferences, events otherwise).
- Identify and speaking opportunities and place Aurora executives, Laureates, and other spokespeople at target events.
- Oversee the organization's digital presence, including website management, social media, and online advertising.
- Manage and develop a multinational communications team, including Content, Creative, Digital and periodic engagement of PR / comms agency.
- Collaborate with Fundraising & Partnerships team to identify and highlight compelling stories, case studies / impact data and support fundraising campaigns, events, and advocacy initiatives.
- Monitor and analyze media coverage and communication metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and make data-driven improvements.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including partner organizations, influencers, community leaders, AHI leadership.
- Manage the communications budget and ensure resources are allocated effectively to support organizational goals.

**Qualifications**
- Bachelor’s degree and 8-10 years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, international development, or other relevant field, preferably in the non-profit sector or in advocacy organizations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to distill complex ideas into clear and compelling messages.
- Proven track record of successfully managing media relations and securing impactful press coverage.
- Experience developing and executing strategic communications plans for nonprofits, international development orgs across traditional and digital media (incl. social).
- Experience leading and building winning teams, identifying, and developing talent.
- Demonstrated experience briefing and crafting talking points, press releases, social media content, and other content for high-level public officials and/or private sector executives
- Experience generating blogs, articles, and other knowledge dissemination projects (podcasts, videos, etc.)
- Ability to lead traditional and social media outreach activities to build a following and promote engagement among internal and external audiences.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
