**CODE ENFORCEMENT INSPECTOR**

Under Supervision, a Code Enforcement Inspector is responsible for the inspection and enforcement of Village codes, ordinances, and regulations as they pertain to property maintenance, land use, zoning, signage, and nuisance abatement. These duties are performed for residential and commercial properties.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
- Enforces building related codes, including International Code Council (ICC) Building Code, Housing Code, Abatement of Dangerous Buildings Code, and local codes such as sprinkling, nuisance, clearing, grading, filling, and zoning, etc. Issues correction warning notices and citations, as assigned.
- Investigates complaints received regarding health, property maintenance, zoning and municipal ordinance violations; and takes appropriate action (i.e., notices, tickets, correspondence.)
- Periodically patrols or inspects an assigned area to monitor for violations of local codes.
- Conducts field investigations of potential violations; gathers evidence; questions or interrogates complainants, witnesses, and suspects; compares facts to code requirements; makes findings; and issues warnings, correction notices, or citations.
- Meets with owners, tenants, contractors, developers, businesses, etc., to review and explain code requirements and violations or potential violations; secures code compliance.
- Maintains records of building and inspection activity and completes related reports. Issues certificates and permits as appropriate.
- Assists in researching problems and complaints regarding commercial and residential buildings, building construction and code compliance. Responds to complex and sensitive building issues.
- Assists in resolving complex and sensitive customer service issues, either personally, by telephone or in writing. Maintains records and documents of customer service issues and resolutions.

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**

**Education and Experience**
- High School Graduate or GED Equivalent
- Associates degree or vocational training with emphasis on inspections or building codes is preferred.
- Two to four years of experience in code enforcement or property maintenance is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
- Experience working with database programs related to property maintenance/building codes preferred.

**Licenses or Certifications**
- Valid Illinois State Driver’s License
- International Code Council (ICC) Property Maintenance Inspector Certification is required, or the ability to obtain certification within the first year of employment.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**
- Must be able to demonstrate a proactive philosophy toward enforcement and regulation, a positive customer service orientation, and be responsible in fulfilling the duties of the position.
- This position requires a high degree of interaction with the general public, residents, and business owners and one must be able to maintain a courteous and professional demeanor.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Strong organizational skills and solid knowledge of Microsoft Office, including, Word and Excel are critical.

Work is performed mostly in outdoor settings, in the inspection of various land use developments, construction sites. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
