Since 1989, the UCAP (Unity, Community, Achievement, Possibility) School, located in Providence, has served Rhode Island as an independent public school dedicated to balancing the scale for students at risk of falling behind. The UCAP School works with approximately 140 students in grades 7 and 8. All students selected for the program have had a history of academic challenges and many have repeated at least one grade. Students are given the opportunity to accelerate in grade if they have been held back, and those who have not, are working towards addressing their own learning loss so that when they do return to their sending districts, they are ready to engage with on grade level work.

Through a program of accelerated instruction, counseling and career education, the mission of the staff of The UCAP School is to prepare these students for successful transition into high school. UCAPs supportive learning community has successfully helped over 4500 Rhode Island middle school students through personalized, enriched journeys. Basic Function: Works closely with UCAPs staff to oversee the counseling and family community outreach programs at UCAP; seeks to manage necessary coordination of staff, and outreach to families, community, and all other individuals or groups who can provide proper assistance for the personal and academic development of students. Specific Duties: Works with all staff to ensure that the academic, social, and emotional needs of students are met in the most effective and thorough manner possible.

Works with all staff to develop and implement behavior management programs and activities for students. This includes meeting with students sent from class, following up on absenteeism and tardiness, mediating conflicts, intervening in classroom situations, overseeing after-school activities, and trying to resolve issues that germinate from outside of school or the student body. Works with all staff, especially the social worker, to provide support for UCAP students from agencies and organizations outside of school, including such things as employment, mentorships, summer programs, and community service sites. Works with local school departments to ensure an orderly and effective recruitment of students enrolling in UCAP, and to ensure the best possible placements for students that are exiting the program, especially upon completion.

Maintains contact with homes of students and works to elicit parental support of the student and the school. Works to obtain support for members of students families when necessary.Provides counseling and other services as called for on a students IEP.Informs key staff and the Director of anything that might jeopardize the safety, health, or well being of any student, group of students, or other persons in the school community. Works with staff on projects or committees designed to enhance a positive school culture and he well being of students and staff. Works to see that students have appropriate information in such areas as substance abuse, conflict resolution, sex, pregnancy, family matters, and employment.

Schedules and holds counseling sessions for individual students or groups of students. Especially students having difficulties at home or at school. Reaches out to community based agencies to provide support for students and families; acts as a liaison between the school and outside agencies.Assist with coverage of any student supervisory duties.Stays up to date on all matters related to mental and emotional well-being of students. Seeks out appropriate professional development.

Performs other duties or tasks as requested by the Director. Minimum Requirements: Rhode Island Department of Education Certification as a school social worker or psychologist.Additional Requirements Desired: A willingness to work as a member of a professional educational team. Speaking ability in Spanish or Portuguese is strongly preferred. Familiarity with urban youth.

**Prior school experience is preferred.Term of Appointment**: 183 days, 8 hours per day; other provisions in accordance with the UCAP handbook for professional certified employees.Remuneration: As outlined in the UCAP Professional Handbook. Participation in the state retirement system.
