- Ability to use computer and other technologies for daily work
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to lead and manage a department of transportation employees under a common mission

**PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Prioritize recruitment and employment of drivers for the department
- Create an enticing and inviting training and onboarding program for new drivers
- Creates business-like, professional work environment for all department employees
- Drives bus or van in an emergency.
- Ensures that the transportation department conforms to all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
- Develops strategic planning initiatives designed to enhance and improve multiple service delivery systems and programs, i.e. Special services, vans, field trips, athletics, etc.
- Maintains safety standards in conformance with state and insurance regulations
- Develops and promotes a program of preventive safety
- Plans and coordinates a program of professional development to ensure drivers are receiving relevant ongoing training.
- Conduct monthly and annual driver meetings to discuss updates, general news, department-wide goals, and problems to overcome. Additionally, these meetings can be an excellent forum for sharing opinions and strategizing the next step towards reaching goals.
- Plans and coordinates preventive safety measures with department members
- Advises superintendent on road conditions relative to inclement weather for decisions on potential school closing.
- Works with school principals, athletic director, and other educational staff, to make transportation arrangements for field trips, athletic events, and out-of-town school activities.
- Prepares and updates the annual bus schedules for all schools in the District and develops recommendations for future transportation needs based on a variety of student, school, and community data.
- Prepares and administers transportation budget.
- Prepares, maintains and updates all Maine/Federal required reports.
- Initiates purchases in accordance with District policies.
- Maintains all District-owned vehicles as part of an established preventative maintenance program.
- Takes an active role in resolving discipline issues occurring on school buses.
- Respond to family and public inquiries with accurate, timely information.
- Develop and maintain working relationships with transportation supply vendors.
- Conduct an annual firsthand (ride along) observation with each driver as part of each driver's annual evaluation to help assess each driver's driving skills and help assess the driver's ability to manage student conduct, bus discipline, and other aspects of bus safety and emergency preparedness.
