**DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS**:
The Planning Aide is the entry level trainee class in the professional Planner Series. Incumbents are not expected to have had any prior related work experience, but are expected to have acquired planning-related education. Assignments are generally limited in scope and set within procedural frameworks established by higher-level positions. Incumbents in this class serve in learning capacity in preparation for future upward mobility within the higher level professional Planner classifications. This class is distinguished from the Assistant Planner by the complexity of work and increased independence of action required at the higher level; and by the significantly higher emphasis on front counter support performed at the lower Planning Aide level.

**SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED**

Receives close supervision from higher level management or supervisory staff.

**Essential Duties and Responsiblities**:
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS**-_Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:_

**Essential Functions**:
1**. **Learns and assists in answering routine questions and providing information to the public; interprets permit data and explains requirements, regulations and procedures; assists with inquiries pertaining to planning division operations and procedures.

6. Assists in preparing a variety of statistical and technical reports; explains recommendations.

Assists in preparing and updating zoning, general plans and existing land use maps using technical drafting equipment and computer programs.

8. Assists in preparing a variety of materials for use in Planning Commission and/or City Council meetings; verifies accuracy of information presented; prepares visual graphics and media for commissions and community groups.

9. Assists planners in reviewing plans to determine compliance with laws, codes and ordinances; assists in the preparation of reports and other materials; conducts site surveys and investigations related to projects, zoning or specific requests.

10. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

**Minimum Qualifications**:
**Experience and Training Guidelines **_Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:_

**Experience**:No prior related work experience required.

**Training**:A Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Economic Development, Community Development, Public Administration, or a related field from an accredited college or university.

**Licenses and Certifications**:Possession of a State of California driver’s license, and the ability to maintain insurability under the City’s vehicle insurance program.

**Knowledge of**:

- Operations, services and activities of an urban planning program.
- Basic urban planning concepts, processes and terminology.
- Basic zoning and land use concepts and terminology.
- Principles and practices of drafting and mechanical drawing.
- Basic report writing, research and data compilation methods.
- Methods and techniques of drafting and mapping.
- Principles and procedures of record keeping.
- Mathematical principles.
