About the Position

Your skills may be an excellent resource for the Animal Care Technician role with Maricopa County.

The Animal Care Technician provides care to horses assigned to the Lake Patrol Mounted Unit in the Sheriff’s Office. The position grooms, feeds, exercises, transports, administers medications to the horses, and performs minor repairs to structures.

Position Qualifications

Education
- High School Diploma or GED.

Experience
- Six (6) months of experience working with animals in a veterinary hospital, humane society, or other animal facility.

OR

Combined education and experience qualifications
- Other combinations of post-secondary education in Animal Sciences or a closely related field may be considered in substitution for the minimum qualifications.

Other requirements
- Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire.
- Training that may be provided on-the-job: FEMA NIMS - IS100 and 700; Safety; Payroll; PREA.
- Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology from a program that has been accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
- Completion of coursework in Animal Sciences.
- Additional experience with animal care.
- Certification from the National Veterinary Technician exam.

Essential Job Tasks

- Provides supervision and care of all animals in the Mounted Unit.
- Maintains accurate animal records.
- Works closely with veterinary staff.
- Maintains equine basic first aid skills.
- Follows supplement and medication schedules.
- Maintains inventory of equipment, food, and supplies.
- Provides courteous service to the public, conducts tours, and represents the Office at meetings.
- Evaluates program operations and provides needs assessment.
- Interacts with internal staff.
- Exercises and grooms the animals, including bathing, brushing, and dressing as required.
- Maintains the feeding, watering, and cleaning schedules for the animals.
- Uses equipment and vehicles to transport animals.
- Cleans and maintains the tack and equipment.
- Maintains the grounds and performs minor repairs on structures.
- Monitors and complies with safety practices and procedures.
- Practices good attendance and punctuality.
