SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:Dean of Research / Office of Technology Licensing: The Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) was established in 1970 to manage the intellectual property assets of Stanford University. OTL evaluates, markets, and licenses technology owned by the University. OTL's mission is to encourage effective technology transfer for the public benefit as well as generating royalty income for Stanford to benefit research and education. OTL is one of the country's most active offices in the field of technology transfer from the university to industry. We promote a culture of belonging, equity, and safety.We embed these values in excellence of education, research, and operation.POSITION SUMMARY:The OTL is seeking to fill a Technology Licensing Associate 2-Licensing Manager, Life Sciences position. In this position, you will be expected to, with limited supervision, collaborate with inventors to evaluate and develop technology licensing opportunities. You will be a key contributor to the OTL’s Life Sciences Licensing Team with responsibilities of evaluating new inventions, developing licensing opportunities and strategies, negotiating the terms and conditions of agreements, and administering patent-related activities. This position requires significant knowledge of negotiation strategies, technology market assessment, intellectual property protection and licensing, as well as working knowledge of IP terms in various contracts and grants.The preference for this position is to be based at the Stanford work location with the option of a hybrid work arrangement, subject to operational need. Hybrid work arrangements require a regular presence at the Stanford work location that is determined based on business needs, and is typically two, three, or four days per week or an equivalent amount of time monthly.CORE DUTIES:With limited supervision, evaluate and analyze new invention disclosures, including initial review, meeting with inventor(s), identifying industry reviewers, making contact, and sending materials.Follow-up, collect and evaluate information, and provide necessary notifications.Develop licensing strategy, identifying potential licensees, negotiating terms, preparing draft agreements, and closing the deal.Oversee patent-related activities including selection of attorney, determination of when and where to file patent applications, and management of an inventory of unlicensed cases from a financial perspective.Monitor license agreements, ensure compliance with diligence terms, prepare and execute amendments, and process terminations.Maintain and develop relations with licensees; monitor progress in licensed product(s) development.* Other duties may also be assigned.Specific job responsibilities include:Manage a complex portfolio of university inventions.Assessment of inventions and identification of commercial applications through patent landscape and market research analysisAssist in developing strategies for protecting intellectual property, which may include pursuing patents as necessary.Provide advice on technology commercialization and build positive relationships with assigned faculty members as well as new inventors to provide feedback to researchers to meaningfully advance technologies toward commercial end points.Perform licensing responsibilities post disclosure including identifying and qualifying licensees; assist with marketing strategies and plans; draft business terms for license agreements; negotiate and execute license agreements; and actively manage technology portfolio including complex technologies and issues.Coordinate efforts on a wide range of activities with other USC Stevens staff members, university researchers, business partners, law firms, and others; tracking activities in databases and ensuring that information is up to date.Engage in outreach activities of the Stanford OTL team by helping to organize and attend networking events on campus.Be an ambassador for Stanford and OTL by acting as primary contact for certain faculty members as assigned.Maintain up to date knowledge of emerging technologies and best practices in licensing agreements.Ability to manage intricate situations involving multiple and sometimes competing stakeholders.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Education & Experience:Bachelor's degree in the life sciences discipline and five years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.Preferred requirements:Strong working knowledge of intellectual property law and industry-standard licenses, including royalty rates and license structures.Ph.D. degree in a life sciences discipline is preferred.Experience in tech transfer (government, industry, or academia) preferred.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Excellent interpersonal, oral, written and presentation skills to connect with senior-level faculty, administration, and industry partner executives, and the ability to build relationships within the campus and ecosystem.Demonstrated customer relationship skills, and the ability to influence and negotiate with internal constituencies and external business partners while maintaining and expanding effective relationships.Demonstrated ability to take ownership and leadership of projects from inception to completion, including developing strategy, implementation and execution of tasks.Strong technical training and analytical skills sufficient to gain a rapid understanding of new cutting-edge technologies.Demonstrated ability to independently exercise sound judgment and decision making, problem solving and critical analysis.Demonstrated knowledge of contract and patent laws, University policies, industry and regulatory requirements.Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize a large variety of tasks and demands, while maintaining a high standard of quality.Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn applicable business-related systems.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping.Occasionally stand, walk, use a telephone, lift, carry, push, pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.Rarely writes by hand.WORK STANDARDS:Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety;
