Respiratory Care Practitioner II – Maryview Medical Center

The Respiratory Therapist will practice within the department policies/procedures, and standards of care for the purpose of promoting optimum cardiopulmonary function and health. The primary role of this Respiratory Therapist is to perform Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs).

*The Respiratory Therapist will focus on the prevention, assessment, treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation, and education of the cardiopulmonary patients. The Respiratory Therapist will apply critical thinking skills and utilize assessment skills to assist in the development, implementation, and goal attainment of the cardiopulmonary patients.

*Review patient data which includes admission notes, patient history/physical examinations, and pulmonary function information (values, blood gases, laboratory data, and clinical tests) to determine present health status of the patient relevant to the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program.

Collect and evaluate additional clinical information by inspection, palpation, percussion, auscultation, hemodynamic monitoring, and patient assessment/review to assist in making a sound respiratory diagnosis when necessary.

*Identify through evidence-based clinical practice unique risk factors, such as hypertension, smoking, poor nutrition, weight, and other pulmonary issues that may be contributing to the patients’ health problems. Provide instructions and education, and document such on the hospital charting system for each patient.

*Review patient data which includes admission notes, patient history/physical examinations, and pulmonary function information (values, blood gases, laboratory data, and clinical tests) to determine present health status of the patient relevant to the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program.

*Explain and instruct planned therapies and goals to help the patient and family understand the current clinical condition, and to allay apprehensions and elicit cooperation necessary for the Cardiopulmonary regimen.

*Measure patient dyspnea level and maintains awareness of overall pulmonary function. Lead in assessment of appropriate oxygen delivery. Stay abreast of current developments in the field of Respiratory Care by attending in-services, presentations, and reading professional journals, attending conferences and seminars.

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation department. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span of the patient. Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information necessary to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age, race, gender, ethnicity, and special needs. The patient populations served in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation are adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. The requisite knowledge and skills should be provided in accordance with the department and BSHSI policies and procedures.

Education:

Graduate of an AMA approved school for Respiratory Care (required)
Bachelor's Degree, Related to Respiratory Therapy/Health care/Healthcare Admin/Business Admin (preferred)

Required Licensing & Certifications:

Current Respiratory Care License in the state they are working (required)
National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentialed (required)
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (preferred)
BLS Basic Life Support - American Heart Association (required)
ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support - American Heart Association or Red Cross (required)
PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support - American Heart Association (required)
NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) - AAP/AWHONN (preferred)
Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) (preferred)
Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) (preferred)
ACCS (Adult Critical Care Specialist) - NBRC (preferred)

Experience:

Two years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist or five years CRT working with patient populations from Nursery/NICU and/or ICU/CCU environments. (required)

Knowledge of non-invasive respiratory therapy equipment such as oximeters or end-tidal CO2 analyzers
Therapeutic Procedures to include CPAP/BiPap, jet aerosol, oxygen therapy, incentive spirometry, chest physiotherapy, pulse oximetry, high flow oxygen, continuous aerosols, ventilator management, diagnostic testing.
Understanding of EKGs, electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
Arterial blood gas punctures and testing
Airway maneuvers
Bedside pulmonary function
Patient assessment
Patient education
Knowledge of chest suction equipment
Knowledge of chest X-ray interpretation

Training:

EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred)
