Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell
Established in 2008, the Zucker School of Medicine was founded by two equal partners: Hofstra University and Northwell Health. The Zucker School of Medicine was built upon the strong clinical and graduate medical education programs of Northwell Health, as well as the robust research and academic programs of both Hofstra University and Northwell's Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. After a formal search, Dr. Lawrence Smith, nationally recognized for his leadership in medicine and medical education, was appointed as Founding Dean of the School of Medicine and after 12 years he was succeeded by Dr. David Battinelli, who previously served as CMO of Northwell Health, Vice Dean of the Zucker School of Medicine and chaired the original curriculum committee to design the school. By holding leadership roles at both the School of Medicine and Northwell Health, the Dean facilitates a unified approach to maintaining a successful partnership, providing innovative leadership, and ensuring the seamless integration of classroom and clinical experiences. Dr. Smith recently transitioned to serve as Dean Emeritus of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and is succeeded by Dr. Battinelli.
Zucker School of Medicine emphasizes early clinical experiences, self-directed learning, and a case-based curriculum effectively preparing students for the changing field of medicine through a team-based approach to training and patient care, including a program that focuses on the ability to problem-solve, think critically, and find information efficiently. Students across all programs -MD, MD/PhD, PhD and other joint-degree programs - have access to the resources offered by Hofstra University and the Northwell Health. These include, but are not limited to, recreational facilities, a research institute, a simulation and standardized patient lab center, private practices and over twenty-three hospital sites throughout New York State, including New York city and Long Island. The Department of Urology has had active involvement with the Zucker School of Medicine since its inception and faculty continue to inform, teach and direct a number of courses in the curriculum.
The School's first class graduated in May 2015. The School has enjoyed impressive growth in size and status in just twelve years of existence, including an expanding community of more than 400 students and 3,100 faculty. For seven years in a row, the Zucker School of Medicine has been recognized among the top medical schools nationwide (, U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools), and for the second year in a row as one of the most diverse medical schools in the country (, U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools). Students have enjoyed tremendous success in the National Resident Matching Program. Students pursuing Urology have matched into prestigious programs at University of California-San Francisco, Mayo Clinic School of Medicine, Emory, Duke, Johns Hopkins and Columbia with others opting to remain at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. The School's sense of collaboration and camaraderie has inspired new ways to educate and shape successful professionals in medicine.
