The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our Irradiations Hardware Engineering team. In this position, the successful candidate will work with a talented group of engineers to develop irradiations testing hardware, in-situ sensors, equipment, and tooling for use at the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) and the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) supporting materials development and technology. This position will give you the opportunity to grow your mechanical design and problem-solving skills in developing innovative mechanical exam components for use in remote environments.



Responsibilities include mechanical and structural design and analysis, hands-on testing and development, and working with local vendors and machine shops to bring your designs to life. Primary design and analysis functions include development of: 3D part models, sketches / drawings, structural calculations / Finite Element Analysis, and tolerance and alignment studies typically culminating in a technical design submittal. preparing the technical requirements package and responding to vendor submittals, cost estimates), preparing equipment installation / operation documents, and providing field support for the components deployed at the NRF and the ATR. This position provides the opportunity for hands-on development, testing, and troubleshooting in Bettis labs and at vendor facilities. The candidate will interface with personnel from multiple departments and sites in various engineering and science disciplines through verbal, written, and in-person communications. This position includes occasional travel to facilities in Idaho as well as local travel to vendor facilities.





Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 1 year of relevant experience; or Currently or previously EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; Previous experience in mechanical equipment design, analysis, or support.
• Electro-mechanical design experience
• Project management
• Experience with remotely operated equipment and / or Reactor Servicing systems.
• A working knowledge of engineering software packages such as Creo, Mathcad, and ANSYS.
• Previous experience with technical specifications and design basis documents such as ASME BPVC or NNL internal design documents.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation.
