Nuclear Science User Facilities (NSUF) Chief Irradiation Scientist Idaho National Laboratory’s Irradiated Fuels and Materials group is seeking a forward‑thinking professional to serve as the NSUF Chief Scientist. The role focuses on neutron irradiations of structural materials, nuclear fuels, and instrumentation for nuclear energy applications. The position is on a hybrid 9x80 schedule onsite at the Research Education Campus, with every other Friday off. Responsibilities Lead the operation of the NSUF and serve as the primary technical contact for all NSUF projects. Maintain an understanding of the scientific and technical objectives of all ongoing research projects. Assist the NSUF Director in identifying, evaluating, developing, and executing projects in collaboration with universities, industry, and international users. Provide strategic input and mentorship for young researchers, supporting the development of the NSUF’s research agenda. Maintain a nationally or internationally recognized reputation in irradiation testing of structural materials, nuclear fuels, and instrumentation. Demonstrate expertise in neutron, ion, and gamma irradiation. Minimum Requirements PhD in Nuclear Engineering or a directly related ABET‑accredited engineering degree. Level 4 – PhD and 4 years of relevant experience; Level 5 – PhD and 6 years of relevant experience. Nationally recognized expertise in nuclear fuels and/or nuclear materials research. Expertise in irradiation testing of nuclear fuels, nuclear materials, and/or reactor instrumentation, including materials testing research and test reactors. Experience with ion and gamma irradiation is a benefit. Demonstrated experience in developing and leading research projects/programs, research partnerships, and strategic planning. A minimum of three letters, including one external, from recognized experts in the candidate’s field. Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q‑level (Top Secret equivalent) security clearance and Sensitive Compartmented Information access. Experience interfacing with the Department of Energy and other U.S. government agencies, universities, and industry. Job Information Pay range: EX4 – Grade 460 ($111,888 to $229,284); EX5 – Grade 470 ($134,124 to $275,136). Multi‑Level posting – placement depends on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills. Physical Requirements The employee must stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, type, and reach with hands and arms, and operate job‑related equipment. Occasional handling of up to 25 pounds is required. Adequate visual acuity and hearing capacity are essential.
