Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Nuclear Engineer to work in our Materials and Fuels Complex Reactor Engineering Department, analyzing neutronics, thermal, or mechanical behavior of advanced reactors demonstrations at INL. You will be responsible for contributing delivery of analyses to support design and acceptance of new advanced reactors, assisting in startup physics testing of advanced reactor, and supporting existing reactors. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Research Education Campus with every other Friday off. INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE‑NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities, and infrastructure, and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development, and fabrication through post‑irradiation analysis. You will apply nuclear engineering principles and methods to design, develop, test, and analyze advanced reactors and nuclear systems. Responsibilities Supports, coordinates and performs confirmatory calculations and startup planning in area of technical expertise (e.g. reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, thermo‑mechanical analysis) to support development of facility and reactor‑specific safety basis supporting analyses Work includes planning, scheduling, and tracking of reactor analyses and planning for startup testing and verification activities to validate analytical work and ensure safety. Responsible for providing support to project and planning activities related to new reactor design and acceptance, talking to design and nuclear safety organizations, working with external reactor designers and DOE (ID and HQ), and contributing organizations (e.g. structural analysis, criticality safety, radiation protection, etc.). Use design methodologies, technologies, and processes which are best practice for the technical discipline to develop and define a design, and to validate that the design meets defined requirements. Document the design (controlled and approved models, drawings, specifications, design descriptions) to establish conformance with design requirements and applicable codes and standards such as ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code, DOE regulations, or NRC regulations. Establish testing, inspection, and quality requirements to ensure technical features important to design functions are maintained. Oversee or otherwise ensure that fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement are done in accordance with the design. Defend analytical methods and results in management and independent reviews. Perform analysis and design tasks supporting project/program interactions with (experiment) sponsors, operations, and engineering organizations to ensure that project related operations are performed in a manner that is consistent with the facility authorization. Develop physics‑based mathematical models of neutronics, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support and verify design. Develop and improve models and analysis methods. Prepare reports and peer‑reviewed publications. Represent programs, the Laboratory, and the Division/Department through programmatic and technical presentations to the public, and to the sponsors and peers at conferences and symposia. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Requirements Level 4: Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline and 9 years’ experience, or a Master's Degree in an engineering discipline and 6 years’ experience, or a PhD in an engineering discipline and 6 years’ experience. Level 5: Bachelor's degree in engineering discipline and 14 years of experience. Master's and 8 years’ experience. PhD and 6 years of experience. Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE "Q" clearance. Preferred Experience Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering or directly related engineering field from an ABET‑accredited institution. Experience in nuclear fuels and materials, reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, core design, analysis tools/methods, and/or closely related technical areas. Experience performing calculations and analyses in support of safety analysis documentation to be submitted to a regulator. Job Information The pay range for this position is: Level 4 ($111,888 - $229,284)/Level 5 ($134,124 - $275,136). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials. TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre‑employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment. Multi‑Level: This is a multi‑level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job‑related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
