About this role

The Principal Systems Design Lead ensures the successful technical implementation of a product design through verification and validation into production launch. They own development/refinement of the architecture and system requirements, gathering internal and external customer inputs, and product design assurance including risk analyses. They work cross-functionally and build strong working relationships with employees at all levels and functions across the business including quality, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, customer service and product management. They develop and command an expert level understanding of the product design and maintain a deep technical understanding of the design and functions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Capture, derive and write customer/user, product, and engineering level (software-hardware) requirements and process definition of new and existing products through the product lifecycle. Complete traceability through to test cases.
  • Document architectures and system level simulations and analyses.
  • Lead cross-functional product quality and safety investigations. Hands-on contribute to analyses and investigation testing.
  • Collaborate with PMO and Engineering team to ensure effective and efficient implementation of PDP (product development process) with focus on Electrical and Firmware deliveries completion. Participate in technical/design reviews, change management process, and ensure design robustness before handing over design to production.
  • Configure and utilize tools and processes to ensure traceability from requirements to verification and validation test cases.
  • Work cross-functionally and build strong working relationships with employees at all levels and functions across the business including quality, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, customer service and product management.
  • Lead top-down and bottom-up risk analyses including DFMEA’s for new design and updating existing designs. Develop and implement project and design risk mitigating solutions.
  • Act as a technical point of contact on projects.
  • Work on and support multiple product development programs at a given time.
  • Participate in evaluation of technical talent.


Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • 7+ years of professional work experience.
  • 3+ years direct experience in requirements management and with electromechanical products.
  • 3+ years experience with Design or Process FMEA’s.
  • 3+ years experience with a Requirements/Test Case Management tool, such as Doors, Jama, or Jira.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical or Software.
  • Experienced with connected solutions and cybersecurity.
  • Must have contributed to the development of at least one commercialized product development that involved embedded software (firmware).
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of Embedded System Design preferably for regulated products.
  • Knowledge and experience with high hazard applications (Industrial Life Safety, SIL2).
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail, while also able to manage multiple projects & priorities.
  • Familiar with ISO9001, engineering standards, quality standards and similar quality systems and processes.
  • Strong communication skills to capture market needs from Product Managers, Technical Support, Service Personnel, and Customers.
  • Skilled in distilling market needs into defined technical requirements and system/subsystem architectures, and communicating them to electrical, software/firmware, and mechanical engineers.
  • Ability to work both collaboratively and independently on assignments to foster continuous improvement of team functions and deliverables.
  • Experience across all phases of the program development lifecycle, from requirements capture through design, implementation, and test.
  • Experienced with FMEAs, SCRUM/AGILE.
  • Self-motivated and demonstrated ability to lead process, requirements/test case efforts.
