Job Description:

The Primary purpose of this job is to manage the training and retraining of the driver workforce including the assessment of employee training needs and on-the-road performance; evaluating systems, tools, and measures to train and determine effectiveness of training, and make recommendations/approved changes to training programs; implement training, retraining, and follow up as necessary.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

  • Make hiring recommendations during candidate interviews based on knowledge of skill set needed to perform function.
  • Train new hires.
  • Provide feedback, coaching/counselling, and recommend training/retraining needs based on observations and reporting statistics.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of retraining; provide appropriate and timely follow up including coaching/counselling; recommending additional action for documented continued failure to meet department expectations.
  • Evaluate and make recommendations to improve existing training systems, tools, and measures to ensure that the company is up-to-date and compliant with all government regulations, safety rules/regulations, and progressive training techniques.
  • Work with other leaders in the Transportation department to ensure that they and their teams are fully versed in company expectations on safety and delivery guidelines.
  • Communicate training needs, training dates, results, and any issued coaching/counselling to Sr. Manager/Manager of Transportation and HR.
  • Utilize training and communication as a tool to ensure delivery practices are consistent in each distribution center and cross dock.
  • Ensure food safety and workplace safety initiatives are known, practiced, and adhered to by all throughout the course of their work.
  • Conduct Smith System safe driver classes (both initial and refresher) at multiple locations as needed.
  • Conduct ride-alongs and/or follow drivers to evaluate performance, adherence to safety rules/regulations, compliance with company directives.
