Department Overview The Department of Emergency Medicine at OHSU houses over 150 faculty and adjunct faculty under the direction of Mary Tanski, M.D., M.B.A., Associate Professor and Department Chair. Our clinicians are located in OHSU’s Level 1 Trauma Center, Doernbecher Pediatric ED, and three community Emergency Departments (Hillsboro Medical Center, Adventist Health Portland, Columbia Memorial Hospital). The department also includes three ED Observation Units, the Immediate Care Virtual Visits Program, and the Oregon Poison Center. With an NIH‑funded research track record and the Center for Policy and Research in Emergency Medicine, OHSU offers EM specialty training through select fellowships in Research, Education, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Administration, EMS, Toxicology, and Ultrasound. We serve OHSU’s mission of Healing, Teaching, and Discovery. Functions / Duties Act as an attending physician in the Emergency Department, including the ED observation unit and Pediatric Emergency Services, as assigned by the Chair. Participate in education of medical and paramedic students, house staff, and nurses; engage in Emergency Department quality assurance activities; provide online medical consultation. Evaluate, diagnose, perform history and physical examinations, and initially treat patients presenting in the emergency department. Stabilize patients with major illnesses or injuries and determine whether additional care is required. Administrative and other duties may be assigned based on department needs and your areas of expertise, including opportunities to participate in departmental management and serve on institutional committees. Required Qualifications Education: MD or equivalent; Emergency Medicine Residency Certificate Experience: Knowledge, training, and experience in clinical and academic Emergency Medicine Job‑Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law Ability to manage a heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing Proficient use of computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical records, word processing, and spreadsheet software Regular and consistent attendance at work Registrations, Certifications, and/or Licenses ABEM or ABOEM Board certified or board eligible Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required if not yet board certified (no longer required once board certification is obtained) Current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification required to have been completed at least once, even when board‑certified Current unlimited Oregon MD (or equivalent) license prior to start date; credentialing must be completed and approved by the OHSU Professional Board to practice as an independent practitioner in an acute care/emergency setting Authorized to prescribe medications and registered with the Federal Drug Administration prior to start date Equal Opportunity Oregon Health & Science University values a diverse and culturally competent workforce.
