Purpose of Classification
The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled electrical installation, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage/high-load, industrial electrical systems and equipment.
THIS IS A BOYNTON BEACH CAREER PATH POSITION
*Depending upon experience and certifications held, this position may be filled at the following levels below.
A. Electrician, Senior: $20.55 - 26.99
B. Journeyman: $27.00 - $31.74
C. Master Electrician: $31.74 - $38.09
Essential Functions
The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to berepresentative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are notlisted in any order of importance. The omission of specific statements of the duties orfunctions does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related,or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Installs, repairs, replaces, and maintains a variety of electrical fixtures, systems, equipment, and related components in compliance with applicable codes.
Coordinates work activities with those of other City departments, contractors, engineers, utility companies, outside agencies, or others as needed.
Performs various skilled, semi-skilled, and manual work functions associated with installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment, such as troubleshooting electrical problems, designing/layout of electrical wiring/systems, designing/installing electrical circuits (to include pull strings), replacing breakers and fuses, replacing defective wiring, removing/installing breaker panels and covers, installing/replacing indoor/outdoor lighting fixtures, installing electrical receptacles/switches, installing electrical equipment, repairing/wiring electrical motors, splicing submersible motors, installing/maintaining exhaust fans/systems, repairing fire alarm systems, installing smoke detectors, setting up sound systems or special event equipment, repairing service feeders, running wires/cables, bending conduit, changing ballasts, or replacing bulbs/batteries. Cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep City facilities and City materials in clean operable condition.
Tests continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components; inspects/tests machinery, equipment and parts for proper operations; makes adjustments, repairs, or replacements as appropriate; reports problem situations.
Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems and fixtures, which may include a utility vehicle, bucket truck, aerial lift, trencher, drill, hole punch, conduit bender, pipe threader, fish tape, gauges, meters, electrical tools, mechanic tools, or diagnostic instruments.
Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools inoperable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning project work areas, and cleaning shop; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, electrical test data, charts, graphs, schematics, diagrams, or other documents.
Oversees City staff to assist in completing assigned tasks.
Provides assistance with the layout and implementation of low-voltage tasks/projects, to include but not limited to installing boxes, conduit (to include pull string), cut-in boxes, surface mounted wire mold, and surface mounted boxes, etc.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, invoices, meter readings, diagnostic reports, architectural drawings, electrical diagrams, blueprints, maps, specifications, codes, rules, regulations, material safety data sheets, manuals, catalogs, directories, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other City departments, electrical inspectors, vendors/suppliers, contractors, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable codes, laws, and regulations; maintains an awareness of new materials, methods, trends and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.
Gathers necessary equipment, tools, parts, or supplies to conduct projects; initiates orders for new or replacement materials; transports, loads, and unloads equipment and materials used in projects.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs various tasks associated with utility equipment maintenance or buildingmaintenance activities, which may include troubleshooting mechanical problems, maintainingwell fields, maintaining ground storage tanks, or fabricating tools and metal components.
Performs various general/manual work tasks associated with department projects, which may include moving furniture, installing appliances/equipment, climbing ladders, cutting wood, drilling holes, hanging holiday banners, digging holes/trenches, or lifting/moving heavy material.
Opens, closes, and secures shop area.
Conducts various errands as needed, which may include picking up supplies/material.
Provides assistance or coverage to other employees as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Electrician, Senior
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or valid equivalent; supplemented by vocational/technical training in electrical systems; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and/or training that includes installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems/equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Journeyman Electrician's License (Master Electrician's License preferred). Must possess (or able to obtain within fourteen (14) days of hire) and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
Journeyman
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or valid equivalent; and Completion certificates from a registered 4-year Apprentice Program that include 4 years of work experience Or Completion certificates of 2 years in a registered apprentice program, which includes 2 years' work experience and additional 3 years practical work experience under the direct supervision of a certified or licensed contractor or 6 years full time practical work experience under the direct supervision of a Certified Electrical Contractor. Must possess and maintain a valid a Journeyman Electrician's License (Master Electrician's License preferred). Must possess (or able to obtain within fourteen (14) days of hire) and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
Master Electrician
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or valid equivalent; and Six (6) years of experience including installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems/equipment. Must possess and maintain a valid Master Electrician's License or possess within twelve (12) months of hire. Must possess (or able to obtain within fourteen (14) days of hire) and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
Supplemental Information
Effectively communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, contractors, engineers, companies, vendors, outside agencies, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Accurately and expeditiously receives and delivers messages and information to the appropriate individuals.
Ability to prepare accurate and thorough written records and reports.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to complete assigned tasks with minimal supervisory direction.
Ability to understand and quickly and accurately follow brief oral and written instructions on moderately complex matters.

Health Insurance
The City pays the entire premium for an eligible employee. The employee may elect to cover a spouse and/or dependent children by paying the applicable premium for the dependent(s).
Dental Insurance
Premiums for eligible employees are paid by the City. Premiums for any covered dependent are paid by the employee with a contribution by the City.
Vision Care Plan
Premiums for eligible employees are paid by the City. Premiums for any covered dependent(s) are paid by the employee.
Life Insurance / Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
The City provides each eligible employee with term life and accidental death insurance.
Supplemental Life Insurance / Supplemental AD&D Insurance
Employees may purchase supplemental term life insurance on an individual-choice basis with premiums based on age. A matching amount of Accidental Death insurance may also be purchased.
Dependent Life Insurance
Employees who select supplemental coverage for themselves may also purchase coverage for their spouse and dependent children.
City Retirement / Pension Plans
The City has pension plans for general employees, police, and firefighters. Each plan is contributory with both the employee and the City contributing to the program.
Supplemental Plans
Supplemental plans provide direct cash payments regardless of any other coverage you may have, and are designed to help fill in any gaps in a medical plan. The employee pays the premiums for these supplemental plans.
Short and Long Term Disability
The City provides Short and Long Term Disability insurance to eligible employees. The plan is designed to cover a disability sustained on or off the job.

The City contracts with an employee assistance program (EAP) to provide employees and their dependents with free, confidential and professional counseling to help resolve personal or family problems.
Deferred Compensation Plans (457 Plans)
The City makes available three deferred compensation plans that the employee may voluntarily contribute to on a tax-deferred basis.
Vacation
All full-time employees accrue time toward paid vacation leave. Accrual begins immediately and vacation may be taken after six months of employment.
Holidays
The City observes 12 paid holidays throughout the year.
Sick Leave / Family Sick Leave
Full-time employees accrue one day of sick leave per month. An employee may elect to use up to 5 days per year of accrued sick time for illness in his/her immediate family.
Tuition Assistance *(Depending on available budget funding)
The Tuition Assistance Program reimburses eligible employees for successful completion of approved courses leading to Associate, Bachelor and Master degrees.
Wellness Program
The City offers many wellness activities and programs throughout the year.
Prepaid Legal Services and Identity Theft Protection Plan
Employees may choose to enroll in a prepaid legal service plan and an identity theft protection plan. The employee pays the premiums for these plans.
Credit Union
All City employees may join the Credit Union of Palm Beach County. In addition to savings and checking accounts, the Credit Union offers different types of loans, investment choices and recreational opportunities.
Section 125 Plan for Health and Dental Premium
Section 125 of the Internal Revenue code allows you to have your dependent coverage premiums deducted before payroll taxes are withheld resulting in tax savings to you.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Employees may participate in flexible spending accounts for reimbursement of medical and/or dependent care expenses
Direct Deposit
Employees may have their bi-weekly paycheck deposited to the financial institution of their choice.
