Walter E. Smithe, a family-owned furniture retailer in business since 1945, is looking for our next General Manager for our Chicago showroom in Lincoln Park.

What you'll do:

  • Sales Coach: Work closely with each designer on your team to bring out their very best. Understand their KPIs, observe their performance, engage with their clients. Provide coaching in-the-moment coaching, as well as during 1:1 meetings.
  • Business Leader: Lead a team of direct reports including designers, support managers, trainees, and store display staff. Use data to identify performance issues, then address by implementing coaching strategies or process improvements. Measure and record the results of the team’s efforts and report historical and anticipated results.
  • Client Service: Be present in the showroom constantly interacting with clients for the best possible experience. Assist with client service-related issues when necessary.
  • Recruitment: Identify, recruit, recommend, and interview qualified design applicants. Participate in interviews and provide input.
  • On-Going Staff Training: Assess staff experience and training needs. Assign training tasks to strengthen their performance in concert with company leadership.
  • Operations: Ensure that all aspects of the showroom run smoothly, including the development of the store schedule, coordination of sales support materials, and acting as the main communication link and between the sales staff and other departments.


What you'll need:

  • Be available when our clients are: weekends, evenings, and some holidays.
  • Access to a vehicle and a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to move through the showroom at a pace that satisfies the needs of our clients
  • Ideally, a bachelor’s degree; however, will consider exceptional non-degreed candidates
  • 10+ years of HIGH END/LUXURY furniture experience with 5+ years in management (MUST HAVE)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Experience with sales systems including Client Relationship Management & Point of Sale
