Principal Geotechnical / Civil Engineer at GFT Remote work model – candidates may work from anywhere in the United States, though preference will be given to applicants in the following locations: Jacksonville, FL Mechanicsburg, PA Owings Mills, MD Houston, TX Fort Worth, TX Denver, CO Salt Lake City, UT Phoenix, AZ Roseville, CA Oakland, CA GFT’s Geotechnical, Dams & Hydraulics team is looking for an experienced Principal Engineer to contribute to innovative water‑management and infrastructure projects across the United States. This role combines technical leadership, business development, and client relationship management to drive high‑quality, sustainable solutions. Responsibilities Independently design and lead major projects, ensuring delivery on scope, schedule, and budget. Manage multidisciplinary teams, subcontractors, and sub‑consultants. Apply advanced geotechnical and civil engineering principles to evaluate, select, and apply techniques and analyses. Conduct dam and levee safety inspections, assessments, and construction support services. Review project documents for compliance and quality assurance. Lead business development activities: generate leads, pursue new opportunities, and build a book of business. Build and maintain client relationships, addressing client needs and managing expectations. Mentor technical staff, assign tasks, supervise and train on specialty software. Assist senior management in implementing business programs and organizational initiatives. Lead project meetings and present engineering assignments as required. Represent the organization at conferences and communications relating to engineering assignments. Education & Experience Bachelor of Science in Geo‑technical or Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution. 15+ years of increasing responsibility and experience in geotechnical or civil engineering. Experience in project management on multidisciplinary teams and in business/client development. Professional Engineering license in a U.S. state, or ability to obtain one via comity. Proficient in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MS Office, and related software. Expert knowledge of slope stability, seepage analysis, dam and levee design, H&H modeling, and stormwater management. Competent with GeoStudio, Mathcad, HEC‑HMS, HEC‑RAS, and similar analysis tools. Preferred Qualifications Master of Science in Geo‑technical or Civil Engineering. Approved FERC Independent Consultant or Subject Matter Expert. Knowledge of deep foundation design or landslide stabilization. Proficiency with LifeSim, RMC‑RFA, ArcGIS, and RMC‑BestFit. Compensation Salary range: $140,000 – $190,000 per year, dependent on experience and geographic location. Benefits Hybrid (in‑person and remote) work environment.
