A successful custodian should be skilled in operating tools and equipment and have considerable knowledge of facilities maintenance, industry standards, working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities (asbestos, lead, chemicals) and working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment and facilities maintenance. Our custodians report to our Facility Manager and are supervised by our Director of Operations.ResponsibilitiesUp-keep of the school building and surrounding school groundsAbility to read and interpret instructions, work requests, and labels on chemical suppliesWork independently and also as a team memberAbility to prioritize tasks and manage several projects simultaneouslyPerform duties with awareness of all district requirements, state and federal laws, and Martin Luther King policies Performs work such as daily cleaning of floors, walls, windows, toilets, furniture, cleaning and shampooing of carpets; stripping, waxing, and buffing of tile floors and other associated work.Performs various custodial duties such as sanitizing, cleaning, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, buffing, dusting furniture, equipment moving, etc. required to maintain a clean and safe environment following established practices and proceduresPerforms work that requires the ability to climb ladders perform heavy manual labor including emptying trash, shoveling snow, sanding, up-keep of outside grounds, lifting and moving furniture, moving supplies and equipment and performs other related duties as requestedDust and cleans furniture, equipment, sills, ledges, heating grills, ventilation units, walls, ceilings, stairs, boilers, etc.Tidying up and restocking restroomsMaintaining the break roomBreaking down boxes received Addressing any cleaning issue that must be taken care of during their shiftHandle emergencies and special request cleaningAbility to communicate effectively verbally and in writingAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the publicAbility to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 poundsPrepares building for authorized events and approved permitsLocks doors, windows and sections of building; activates security alarmsEnsures nothing is removed from the building without permission from the Executive DirectorProvides assistance to maintain safe and effective building operationsPerforms upkeep such as changing light bulbs and replacing ceiling tilesSweeps/shovels snow and applies sand and saltEmpties wastebaskets, trash receptacles from offices, classrooms, lounges, kitchen, gymnasium, corridors and bathrooms.
