As part of HDR’s Transportation Business Group, you’ll help shape the systems that move people and goods safely, efficiently, and sustainably. From designing resilient highways and iconic bridges to advancing transit, passenger and freight rail, aviation, federal transportation ports and marine infrastructure, your work will directly support economic vitality, public safety, sustainable and resilient communities and quality of life. Primary Responsibilities Grow HDR’s global Community Transportation Strategy practice to keep the communities our clients serve top of mind. Partner with business leaders to coordinate activities that advance enterprise goals across sectors. Expand existing transportation services, identify HDR staff resources and market sector opportunities to raise technical excellence and deliver community‑focused solutions. Engage with existing and prospective clients to deepen market penetration, foster growth strategies, and identify key project opportunities. Act as an industry leader, participating in events and committees, presenting at conferences, publishing on equity topics, and broadening HDR’s presence. Collaborate with Advisory Services, Sustainability, Economics, Environmental Sciences, and other teams to develop innovative tools and methods for clients. Program Leadership The Director will lead HDR’s Community Transportation Strategy practice, providing strategies, tools, and analyses for organization policies, project-level outcomes, community‑informed decision‑making, compliance, and community benefits and workforce development planning. Responsibilities include maintaining a database of HDR resources, tracking market trends, coordinating cross‑sector initiatives, and developing annual strategic plans to strengthen the program. Project and Program Support The Director serves as a technical focal point for transportation market sectors, delivering community‑centered solutions, creating alliances, and ensuring high‑quality deliverables. Duties include technical support, quality oversight, best practice development, project leadership, and principal‑level program/project management. Marketing and Business Development The Director supports transportation market sector directors in developing community‑focused initiatives, building client relationships, capturing major pursuit opportunities, and coordinating proposal preparation and presentations. Technical Staff Development The Director leads and defines initiatives on community‑centered decision‑making strategies, develops an educational program, mentors staff, and identifies recruitment and retention strategies. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in urban, city, or regional planning, engineering, economics, marketing, communications, public relations, sustainability, or related field. 15 years of experience in the Architecture & Engineering industry. Experience managing client relationships and programs/projects. Industry leadership in associations and visible presence in relevant markets. Ability to collaborate with client managers, technical practice directors, market sector directors, and operations staff. Proven recruiting, leading staff, and mentoring experience. Commitment to HDR values and active participation in employee‑owned culture. Understanding of HDR’s Business Classes, Cross Sectors, Market Sectors, and Business Groups. Understanding of HDR’s ID&E initiatives and corporate responsibility process. Master’s degree in a related field preferred. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a professional, architecture, engineering or closely related field. Minimum of 10 years of experience in the related field. Professional or engineering registration with related technical experience. Experience developing and managing diverse teams. Cooperative work with business class directors, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers. Commitment to quality, improvement and HDR values.
