A Brief Overview
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is seeking a Clinical Nurse Expert to join their CHOP Specialty Care at Virtua. This position will be Monday-Friday and it will require travel to the Princeton, Voorhees and Mays Landing Specialty Care Centers. The hiring manager prefers current and/or previous experience with nurse education, pediatrics, regulatory compliance and supervisory experience.
The Clinical Expert practices at the level of an expert practitioner of professional nursing in accordance with, and guided by the CHOP Nursing Professional Practice Model. The nurse at this level demonstrates expertise in caring for patients with multiple and complex problems and leads the advancement of safe, quality clinical practice and development of advanced clinical skills in others. Provides age/developmentally appropriate care. Care is delivered through RN leadership for patient care within the framework of family-centered care.
The Clinical Nurse Expert adheres to the organizational and nursing department mission, vision, and values. S/he practices in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics; the ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice; practice standards of applicable specialty nursing organizations; and CHOP developed standards of nursing practice and may mentor others to incorporate these guidelines into their individual practice. The professional nurse practices within the defined scope of practice designated by the Nurse Practice Acts of Pennsylvania and/or New Jersey, depending on the assigned work site.
What you will do
* Clinical Practice
* Follows the nursing process to deliver safe, compassionate, and culturally effective care:
* Manages the care of complex and/or vulnerable populations through expert direct care and by supporting other clinical staff with their direct patient care
* Educates clinical staff to recognize clinical changes that are indicative of patient deterioration and on the appropriate actions steps to ensure patient safety
* Coaches and interacts with clinical staff to coordinate all facets of patient care with the multidisciplinary team. Assures coordination of care across the continuum, utilizing case management resources as needed.
* Consistently incorporates evidence based practice to provide nursing care that eliminates preventable events of patient harm and promotes excellent patient outcomes.
* Maintains an awareness of trends in nursing outcomes and mentors clinical staff to improve outcomes.
* Recognizes patient/family situations which create ethical dilemmas or distress for self and/or colleagues; provides leadership to resolve the distress and/or ensure caregiver support.
* Expert educator of patients/families and staff
* Monitors professional practice related to nursing sensitive indicators (e.g. medication delivery, patient falls, patient and family experience). Educates colleagues and creates programs to drive metrics above the mean of comparison practices/benchmarks
* Accountable for the adoption and rapid implementation of clinical practice change into the practice of nursing within the practice.
* Communication
* Role models effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and good listening skills to empathically communicate with patients/ families, and colleagues. Coaches others to improve communication skills.
* Consistently follows safe hand-off practices as defined in patient care standards and procedures; coaches colleagues in hand-offs.
* Exemplifies the use of safety behaviors for error prevention and hold colleagues accountable for their use. Identifies and addresses potential safety events and communicates with unit leadership as needed. Enters KAPS reports, including those for good catch/near miss situations. Follows up on safety events as assigned. Identifies trends in safety event reports and participates in systems improvement to respond to the trend.

Education Qualifications
* Bachelor's Degree Nursing Required
Experience Qualifications
* At least two (2) years previous nursing experience Required or
* Progressive leadership Preferred
* Prior pediatric experience or in a specialty area Preferred
Skills and Abilities
* Informatics competencies for registered nurses:
* Computer Competency
* Basic use of a computers (e.g mouse, keyboard, printer, USB ports), fax machines
* Basic use of MS Office Suite
* Use of MS Outlook email, opening attachments, attaching files to emails, and saving attached files to computer.
* Use of shared network file space.
* Basic use of patient care devices. (e.g. IV pumps, point of care devices, CR monitors)
* Navigation and use of Clinical communication systems

* Information Management Literacy
* Navigation of electronic health records.
* Ability to locate and review specific patient data in clinical information systems and the electronic health record.
* Understanding of policies and procedures around timeliness of care, use of a clinical information system, and support of safe nursing practice. (e.g. use of clinical pathways.)
* Ability to collect clinical data using quality improvement tools (e.g. hand hygiene).
* Understanding confidentiality and privacy regulations when using a patient electronic health record.
* Coordination of patient care information in a patient care record that utilizes multiple systems.
Licenses and Certifications
* Registered Nurse (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or
* Registered Nurse (New Jersey) - New Jersey State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required and
* Basic Life Support (BLS) - issued through on organization that requires a hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (ex. American Heart Association or Red Cross). - upon hire - Required
