Position Title: Certified Pathologist Assistant (CPA)
Salary: $45.00 - $55.00 per hour
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 12:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Location: Laboratory setting
Job Summary
The Certified Pathologist Assistant (CPA) provides essential support in a pathology lab, performing gross examinations, preparing tissue samples, and documenting surgical and autopsy specimens. This role requires precision, technical expertise, and strict adherence to compliance and safety standards. The CPA will collaborate closely with pathologists and lab staff to ensure accurate, timely analysis of specimens, while also contributing to mentorship and quality control initiatives within the lab.
Key Responsibilities
- Gross Examination:
- Conduct detailed examination and dissection of surgical specimens under the supervision of pathologists, ensuring correct tissue sampling and proper handling.
- Specimen Preparation:
- Prepare tissues for microscopic examination, including selection, trimming, and processing in accordance with established protocols.
- Documentation:
- Record gross descriptions, measurements, and any special procedures with precision and accuracy, adhering to regulatory standards and institutional policies.
- Laboratory Coordination:
- Work closely with lab staff to ensure the efficient labeling, storage, and transfer of specimens throughout the workflow.
- Quality Control:
- Participate in quality control processes, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of findings and maintaining high standards in pathology services.
- Mentorship:
- Assist in the training of Pathologist Assistant students and grossing technicians, especially in complex cases, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Follow all safety protocols, ensuring compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and institutional safety standards, and reporting any potential issues.
- Communication:
- Maintain clear and timely communication with pathologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure proper specimen analysis and reporting.
- Continuing Education:
- Engage in ongoing professional development to stay up-to-date on advancements in pathology techniques, technologies, and best practices.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Pathology Assisting or a related field from an accredited program.
- Certification:
- ASCP certification as a Pathologists Assistant (PA) is required.
- Experience:
- 1-2 years in a pathology lab setting is preferred; however, new graduates with relevant training will also be considered.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in gross examination and dissection.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, pathology, and lab protocols.
- Familiarity with Dragon One Medical Dictation Software (preferred).
- Strong organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Experience with LIS (Laboratory Information System) and EMR (Electronic Medical Records) systems is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Mobility:
- Ability to stand for extended periods and handle specimens and laboratory equipment.
- Manual Dexterity:
- Required for handling delicate instruments and performing precise procedures.
Working Conditions
- Environment:
- Laboratory and clinical settings with potential exposure to biological specimens and hazardous materials. Adherence to safety protocols is essential.
This role is ideal for certified pathology professionals who are meticulous, detail-oriented, and skilled in specimen handling, with the ability to work effectively in a clinical laboratory setting. The CPA will play a vital role in supporting pathologists and maintaining the accuracy and quality of pathology services.
