Department Overview

 

PG&E’s Information Technology organization is a unified organization comprised of various Departments which collaborate effectively in order to deliver high quality technology solutions. The IT Infrastructure & Operations (I&O) organization covers all of our service territory and performs construction, support, replacement and maintenance of PG&E's IT system, including Analog multiplex, Digital multiplex, Data communications, Telephony, Transmission Towers & Microwaves, Fiber Optics, Tele-metering, Mobile radio, Digital Transmission, LAN/WAN, SCADA, Channel Banks and High Voltage and Substation.

 

The I&O organization provides emergency restoration services both internal to the company as well as services for 3rd parties with whom we have contracts. Other major areas of responsibility include Regulatory and Corporation compliance for IT systems, resolution of incidents, Change and Problem management as it relates to our IT infrastructure, provide end user support; provide break / fix and preventative maintenance on our IT infrastructure.

 

 

Position Summary

This position is for a Senior IT Product Specialist and is responsible for supporting the PG&E IT Microwave System within the IT Network Transport team.  This team installs, configures and operates various Layer 1/Transport technologies. Additionally, this position will be asked to support project initiatives.

 

The successful candidate must have:

  • Operational experience in an enterprise environment and a strong understanding of Microwave Radio technologies associated with large scale enterprise networks, supporting mission critical business applications.
  • Strong knowledge of various network systems and services, including Microwave Radio
  • Experience with path modeling software to perform path profiling and path calculations to predict performance of microwave radio paths.
  • Familiarity with various protocols and how they are used, including SONET, Layer 2 Ethernet, Fiber Channel, etc.
  • Familiarity with FCC rulemaking and licensing process.
  • Strong understanding of troubleshooting complex performance issues and ability to apply a methodical process in problem solving.
  • Must effectively manage client relationships, manage multiple priorities, and work independently as well as in a team environment to meet or exceed service level agreement parameters.
  • Maintain familiarity with currently implemented and new technology, including new versions of software/firmware, implementation of upgrades, and changes to procedures.
  • Provide clear communication and documentation of events, processes, procedures, and configuration details.

 

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory and will be agreed upon by the successful candidate and hiring leader.

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed between the entry point and the middle of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​ This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.  

 

A reasonable salary range is:​

 

Bay Area Minimum:      $114,000

Bay Area Maximum:     $182,000

California Minimum:    $108,000

California Maximum:   $173,00

 

Job Responsibilities

 

Project and Product Support:

  • Performs advanced management, and support of transport systems
  • Responsible for complex technical support and administration of critical infrastructure network components (Microwave.)
  • Be a Subject Matter Expert for the assigned products
  • Understand and analyze a project’s business and technical requirements. Provide guidance and recommendations for gaps in the requirements.
  • Document design specifications, installation instructions, configuration manuals, procedure manuals, and other system-related information.
  • Evaluation of new equipment and testing in a lab environment to confirm interoperability in the PG&E network. 
  • Write Standards and Procedures and maintain documentation on a yearly basis.
  • Be able to provide accurate project timelines, labor, and materials cost estimates to the project for assigned products or services.
  • Be able to verify stability, interoperability, portability, security, or scalability of system architecture.
  • Have the ability to manage multiple assigned projects
  • Mentors and trains others on product management and operational support
  • Performs advanced testing and evaluations of new technologies in a lab environment when required
  • Provides advanced project support and applies project management principles for project implementation when required
  • Work closely with peers, supervisor, team members and others as needed to identify, plan, prioritize and implement complex project deliverables when required

 

Consulting:

  • Evaluate and articulate market needs and opportunities for technology-based products and services
  • As a senior subject-matter expert, provides consultation to other IT professionals and stakeholders in product implementation and use
  • Provide advanced content-specific collaboration with technical architects

 

Compliance and Process Improvement:

  • Assures compliance with industry and company standards
  • Continually look for opportunities to improve processes, reduce costs, increase efficiencies, etc.
  • Apply security procedures for all work
  • May develop, recommend and implement organizational process improvements with leadership agreement

 

Training:

  • Assist other specialists, analysts and technicians as appropriate in developing their own technical skills through training, presentations and involvement in the process of maintaining and supporting these systems (installations, upgrades, troubleshooting, problem resolution, etc.)
  • Document and maintain training class curriculum

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Associates Degree in Computer Science or job-related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 4 years of IT operations experience
  • Must have advanced knowledge of designated product line and/or service.
  • Experience with Microwave Radio
  • Experience with troubleshooting/operating Layer 1 Transport Systems
  • Ability to perform preventative and remedial maintenance to operating systems.
  • Develop and document operational procedures.
  • Ability to evaluate existing and proposed systems and recommend upgrades and/or modifications.
  • Knowledge of operating of network systems and maintenance support.
  • Knowledge of system management.

 

Desired:

 

  • BA or BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Business or related discipline or equivalent experience or technical training
  • 6+ years of network or telecommunications operations experience
  • Certification applicable to the system being supported (e.g., CCIE, CCNA)
  • Ability to research and survey new products and/or releases (e.g., productivity tools)
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Able to work and communicate across multiple departments
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Solid knowledge of key PG&E systems and processes
