* Collaborating for outpatient and inpatient support with advanced practice providers, as well as resident and fellow trainees

Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Neurosurgery

Celebrating its 60th year as a part of the Medical College of Wisconsin, the Department of Neurosurgery is a nationally prominent program and one of the largest such departments in the United States. It has nearly doubled in size over the last seven years - from 22 faculty in 2016 to 40 in 2023. In addition, there are 22 Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), 14 residents, and 186 staff that support the clinical, research, and educational missions.

The annual departmental budget is approximately $38 million; this includes more than $10.1 million in annual extramural research funding, which is one of the largest research budgets of any department at MCW. Remaining funds are composed of clinical revenues - up nearly $6 million since 2016, based on 2x increases in new patient volume and surgical cases - as well as endowment and other proceeds.

Growing from its creation in 1963 as a Division, and in 1988 as a Department, and the completion of the first resident's training in 1971, the Department of Neurosurgery has expanded in numerous dramatic and groundbreaking ways. It instituted the first Spine Fellowship Program in the United States in 1987; established "SpineCare" in 1995, the first interdisciplinary Spine Program in the nation under the leadership of Founding Chair, Sanford J. Larson; who also established the Vehicle Crash Lab, the world's only car crash facility at an academic institution, in 1998. In 2003, the Department established the Neuroscience Research Laboratories at Milwaukee's Clement J. Zablocki Veterans' Administration Medical Center, and continued innovation by forming the Translational Brain Tumor Research Program in 2008, the Neurosurgery Research Facility in 2009, and the Center for Neurotrauma Research in 2018.

Today, the Department's activities include nationally recognized clinical, educational, and research programs with an annual budget of $38M, and additional philanthropic support for the Sanford J Larson and Shekar N. Kurpad Endowed Chairs in Neurosurgery. The mission of the Department of Neurosurgery remains providing subspecialty adult and pediatric neurosurgical care that is patient-centered, evidenced-informed, and value-based; conducting research that advances the science of neurologic disease and has a positive translational impact on clinical care; and promoting an environment of education and scholarship for trainees, faculty, and staff.

Listed below are several key indicators of departmental growth and achievements that are critical to MCW and our clinical partners.

* Total faculty (research and clinical) has nearly doubled in size, from 22 in 2016 to 40 in 2023.
* New patient volume and surgical cases have doubled in the same time period.
* The Department Quasi Endowment is at nearly $10M in FY 2023.
* Every research faculty member is extramurally funded. Total extramural grants currently exceed $60M; The Department faculty has been awarded four new RO-1 grants and a large Focused Program Award (FPA) from the U.S. Department of Defense in the first 6 calendar months of 2023, alone.
* Physician, staff, and APP engagement scores are among the highest at Froedtert/MCW/Children's Wisconsin.
* The Neurosurgery Residency Program has grown to a complement of 14 and is sought after by the most competitive applicants on a national scale.
* Philanthropic dollars are now at $15.0M, up more than tenfold from $1.5M in 2016.
* Focused mentorship is provided for faculty and staff at all levels to grow their leadership strengths.

The Department's advancement has been fueled through diversity-focused recruitment, expansion, and success of all (faculty, APPs, residents, and staff) for the greater good of the department, MCW, and its clinical partners.
