Position Title Laboratory Technician Position Summary

Laboratory Technician is a grant funded position within the Biology Department. The lab focuses on eukaryotic microbial evolution, emphasizing interaction and behavior, particularly in amoeboid microorganisms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Conducts field-based sample collection, genome & transcriptome (high throughput) sequencing & analyses, culturing, DNA/RNA extraction and purification, PCR and RT-PCR, light and fluorescence microscopy, Bioinformatics skills.
* Performs or oversees routine lab management tasks, including cleaning/autoclaving, preparing media, ordering supplies and interacting with vendors, maintaining instrumentation, implementing laboratory safety standards.
* Troubleshooting/optimizing protocols and developing new methods.
* Trains and/or supervises undergraduate research students.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or computer/bioinformatics disciplines preferred. Five years of relevant research experience OR, any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education. Microcopy and molecular techniques and Basic Bioinformatics/Phylogenetics knowledge required.

Good oral and written communication skills are required. The incumbent must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Must be attentive to detail and able to manage multiple projects and work effectively with a diverse population. This employee must be able to work with minimal supervision. This position requires the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. The ability to write routine reports and correspondence is essential. Ability to speak effectively when interacting with faculty, staff, students, and the public. Also, must be able to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.

Must possess the ability to perform intermediate level computer skills using the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and/or WordPerfect which includes such things as typing basic letters, memos, etc.
