Roles & Responsibilities:

The Senior Physician Informaticist is responsible for the informatics and data strategy for research and education for the Icahn School of Medicine. The objectives of the strategy are to: (1) enhance researcher productivity through the development and execution of a roadmap to expand informatics capability and data resources with enhanced data governance within a learning health system; (2) raise the level of informatics understanding and skill throughout the school through the development and execution of a roadmap with school-wide engagement; (3) boost Sinai's regional and national recognition in the informatics and data field through publications, workshops and outreach; (4) grow revenue by identifying and delivering new funding pathways from internal and external means; and (5) coordinate closely through effective partnership with leadership throughout MSHS.

The incumbent works closely with Scientific Computing and Data's Mount Sinai Data Warehouse, Research Data Services, High Performance Computing and Administrative teams to amplify the scientific impact and expand the sustainability of the team's work. The overarching goal of the strategy is to improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability, reusability, reproducibility and sustainability of Sinai's informatics and data ecosystem.

The incumbent ensures coordination and alignment with all federal and state regulatory guidelines and MSHS institutional processes. Internal partnership includes but is not limited to Digital Technology Partners, Mount Sinai Innovation Partners, Legal, the Institutional Review Board, senior MSHS leadership and Compliance. The incumbent reports to the Dean for Scientific Computing and Data.

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai was awarded nearly $500 million in research funding in 2023, with nearly $200 million of research enabled through Scientific Computing and Data team. Mount Sinai is ranked 14th nationwide in NIH funding and among the 99th percentile in research dollars per investigator according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Responsibilities

Develop and execute an informatics and data strategy for researchers
  • Develop and execute a roadmap for informatics and data geared to accelerate researcher productivity within a learning health system. The roadmap maximally enhances the findability, accessibility, interoperability and/or integration, common data definitions and structures, reusability, reproducibility of informatics and data resources consistent with regulatory compliance, security, institutional priorities, effective data governance throughout MSHS within the available budget. Data resources include, but are not limited to, electronic health record data, Epic, genomic data sets, digitized pathology slides, radiology imaging data sets and other multi-modal data and clinical data systems.
  • Liaise, coordinate and partner with all teams throughout MSHS providing informatics and data resources to develop synchronized roadmaps to maximize synergies and economies of scale.
  • Ensure that the strategy and roadmap are aligned with the overall health system and school strategy and objectives.
  • Promote modern approaches in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Models (LLMs) within the computational and data ecosystem to advance researcher productivity and scientific discovery.
  • Utilize a maturity matrix and/or other methods to help benchmark, evaluate and track informatics and data progress in comparison with other institutions.
  • Promote the strategy, roadmap and accomplishments throughout Mount Sinai.
  • The Senior Physician Informaticist's role sets the long-term strategic vision and direction for informatics and data at the organizational level with senior leadership.
  • Raise the level of understanding and skill of informatics and data resources
    • Develop a roadmap to increase the Sinai community's understanding of informatics- and data-related opportunities and challenges. The roadmap addresses a broad audience, including medical students, fellows, residents, house staff, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, staff faculty and senior leadership.
    • Liaise with the grad, summer school, internship, training and medical school program directors, deans, clinicians and researchers to develop programs for informatics and data literacy.
    • Develop, guide, organize and/or conduct seminar series/lectures/classes/workshops/boot camps on informatics and data.
    • Responsible for educating and increasing informatics literacy across the entire institution, including developing training programs, seminars, and workshops.
    • Fill the role of enhancing the institution's national and regional presence in the field of informatics and data through publications, workshops, and leadership in professional communities.
    • Identify and track metrics on the effectiveness of outreach activities.

Serve as a leader within the Mount Sinai Health System
  • Lead and participate in informatics and data-related committees focused on strategy and implementation. Committees may include topics such as AI/machine learning, ethics, natural language processing, data definitions, data governance, genomic/pathology/radiology and other specialized clinical data systems, Epic, internal and external data reuse, learning health systems and translational science.
  • Execute on strategic innovation initiatives as directed by the Dean, the school and the health system. Coordinate with Digital Technology Partners, Legal, Compliance, Mount Sinai Innovation Partners, senior school and MSHS leadership on MSHS-wide goals.
  • Leverage your highly-effective communication and presentation skills for a variety of audiences, including senior leadership.
  • Ensure that all security, regulatory and auditing guidelines are followed.
  • Use a lens of equity in establishing and promoting policies and procedures.
  • Champion and advocate for the value of diversity, equity and inclusion taking action to increase workplace diversity by promoting and developing staff from under-represented minority groups.
  • Confront racist, sexist or other inappropriate behavior and challenge exclusionary organizational practices and serving as a role model to promote anti-racist behaviors.
  • Utilize leadership, collaborative, problem-solving and decision-making skills to facilitate and encourage participation of team members to meet objectives in congruence with approved standards, guidelines and team goals.

Deliver on opportunities to grow reputation and funding
  • Identify and deliver on opportunities to increase revenue from internal sources, including the development and evolution of chargeback rates.
  • Identify and deliver on opportunities to increase revenue from external sources, including from national or state funding agencies, industry, donors and foundations.
  • Identifying and securing external funding opportunities, including grants and collaborations with industry partners.
  • Convene regional workshops on informatics and data. Participate and lead sessions and/or presentations at national meetings.
  • Lead policy development in informatics and data, focusing on innovative approaches and digital transformation strategies.
  • Collaborate with other PIs to lead informatics-related sections for grant proposals and publications.
  • Represent the organization in external forums and high-level collaborations.
  • Develop and publish manuscripts related to data and informatics.
  • Promote the strategy, roadmap and accomplishments regionally and nationally.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a doctoral program in Medicine (M.D.)
  • At least 15 years of professional experience, with at least seven or more years of direct experience with the following job duties:
    • Partnering with researchers and clinicians to understand and anticipate their needs including at an academic medical center.
    • Developing strategic plans and roadmaps for informatics- and data-related products and services.
    • Giving impactful presentations.
    • Communicating and collaborating effectively throughout the organization including with senior leadership.
    • Representing the organization.
    • Experienced in several of the following domains: biomedical informatics, outcomes and health services research, clinical trials, clinical decision support, population health and claims analytics, quality metrics and reporting, data security, privacy and regulatory compliance, and data governance.
  • Experience as a physician scientist and principal investigator
