Reports To: Cheryl Woods, Chief Administrative Manager, Adult Criminal Practice Divisions

Location: KCCH, Seattle; this position may have opportunities for telecommuting as business needs allow.

Schedule: Monday - Friday; our core business hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Job Duties

Roles & Responsibilities

The person in this role will lead a team of legal service professionals in supporting the attorneys within the Appellate and Post-Sentencing Units with a lens that supports the PAO and the County's Race, Equity, and Social Justice goals. They will also carry their own Appellate Unit workload.

Strategic Planning and Leadership

* Together, with the Chief Administrative Manager and the Unit Chairs, leads, manages, directs, assigns, and evaluates the work of the Units' Legal Service Professionals.
* Serves as a member of the Appellate and Post-Sentencing leadership teams to conduct long-term planning, strategizing, and formulation to establish policies, procedures, and innovation.
* Collaborates with committees and other Divisions and units engaged in continuous improvement efforts.
* Monitors the two units' legal service professional workloads and makes staffing recommendations based on priorities.

Oversight of Daily Operations

* Supervises assigned team of legal service professionals in accordance with PAO policies and the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the PAO and Teamsters Local No. 117.
* Works closely with Division and Unit leadership to ensure compliance with applicable policies and procedures and cultivate a healthy work culture.
* Assigns work to Appellate and Post-Sentencing Legal Service Professionals, ensures work is accomplished in a timely manner, determines work assignments and work schedules as needed.
* Responds to and resolves daily operational questions/issues within assigned units.
* Addresses Facilities needs for the Appellate and Post-Sentencing Units and coordinates office moves as needed.
* Participates in the hiring and training process for new legal service professional team members.
* Establishes employee goals through regular individual coaching and development sessions.
* Provides timely constructive feedback up to corrective action for performance improvement to assigned team members and conducts annual employee performance reviews.
* Makes recommendations on promotion, discipline, and termination in accordance with office policy and terms of the union contract.
* Oversees time and attendance and approves employee time in PeopleSoft every two weeks.
* Attends supervisor meetings and trainings.
* Meets with new DPAs in the units to review the DPA/paralegal overview and expectations.
* Collaborates with Division Chief, Chief Administrative Manager, Unit Chairs, and other leadership to devise and execute further evolution of this position to meet changing business needs and responsibilities.
* Manages the daily Appellate Unit needs, including, but not limited to processing appeals, opinions, and mandates, submitting filings and documents with various courts, and working up COA and S. Ct. oral arguments.
* Other tasks and responsibilities may be added or modified as business needs evolve.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

* Knowledge of the overall legal system and court procedures
* Knowledge of criminal practice operations, workflows, and processes is a plus.
* Knowledge of legal terminology and the ability to interpret and apply laws, rules, and regulations.
* Skill in establishing effective and efficient processes to accomplish tasks, with a focus on continuous improvement. Strong problem solver with the ability to "think outside of the box."
