General Statement of Duties

Performs mechanical maintenance and repair of landfill vehicles and heavy equipment; performs related work as required. Work under the direct supervision of the Lead Landfill Mechanic. Performs necessary service and maintenance work of landfill heavy equipment and vehicles.

Classification Summary

The primary function of an employee in this class is to maintain and repair all Solid Waste Department vehicles and equipment according to manufacturer specifications satisfying equipment warranties. The employee has responsibility to ensure that all Department equipment is maintained, serviced, and available for use by Department employees. The work is performed under the supervision of the Lead Landfill Mechanic. The principal duties of this class are performed in a maintenance shop environment that may involve exposure to adverse weather conditions and related hazards in a landfill.

Examples of Work

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Performs maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on all landfill vehicles, heavy equipment, and other related equipment;
* Maintains effective working relationship with co-workers, vendors, and equipment support groups;
* Performs repairs on hydraulic systems, drive trains, suspensions, steering systems, heating and air conditioning systems, ventilation systems, and emissions and related systems;
* Performs maintenance on landfill vehicles and equipment;
* Updates and maintains shop maintenance logs for repairs on all equipment and vehicles;
* Orders parts and maintains inventory for a diverse variety of equipment and vehicles as needed;
* Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County and Department policies, procedures, and safety practices and in accordance with automotive industry standards, policies, procedures, and safety practices.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

* Performs as relief heavy equipment operator, as needed;
* Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

* Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic's trade, with particular reference to heavy duty maintenance and equipment;
* The operating and maintenance requirements of heavy duty and maintenance equipment;
* Heavy equipment and automotive repair and maintenance safety principles and practices including the use of air-powered equipment, lifts, and hoists;
* Heavy equipment hydraulic systems operation and maintenance;
* Automotive electrical systems;

Ability to:

* Work cooperatively and constructively with fellow workers and members of the public to provide public service of the
* highest quality and quantity;
* Follow oral and written instructions;
* Operate mechanical tools and equipment for heavy equipment and automotive repair;
* Repair heavy equipment and automotive engines, electrical systems, drive train and suspension systems, hoses and
* belts, and specialty parts;
* Operate and inspect heavy equipment and vehicles for common maintenance problems and concerns and monitor fluid
* levels;
* Operate air-powered equipment and tire break-down equipment;
* Perform engine tune-ups including computerized control systems;
* Read and comprehend heavy equipment and automotive maintenance and repair manuals;
* Keep accurate maintenance logs and records;
* Operate a personal computer and related software required for the position;
* Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
* Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive
* deadlines;
* Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;
* Operate diagnostic and related electronic equipment using program applications appropriate to assigned duties;
* Lift/move up to 100 pounds using hoists, pulleys, or other lifting equipment;
* Work 10-hour days and variable shifts;
* Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with vendors, the public and other employees.

Acceptable Experience and Training

* High school diploma or GED equivalency is required: and
* Associates degree in Votech or Heavy Equipment Mechanic is preferred;
* At least five (5) years of technically related equipment repair and operation experience is required; or
* Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Special Qualifications

* Idaho driver's license with Class B CDL endorsement;
* Must successfully complete a background investigation.

Essential Physical Abilities

* Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively in person, and diagnose maintenance problems and relay maintenance needs to customers;
* Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and work orders, operate heavy equipment and a motor vehicle, and inspect heavy equipment and automotive parts, fluid levels, equipment operation, and make necessary repairs;
* Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a variety of automotive shop tools including hand and power tools, electronic diagnostic and related specialized equipment, operate heavy equipment and motor vehicles, and make adjustments to equipment;
* Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, strength, agility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift/move up to 100 pounds, work under vehicles and in confined spaces, remove and replace parts for repair and replacement, and work in an automotive shop and landfill environment.
