Job Description:
TITLE: Student Support and Academic Coaching - Graduate Students
DEPARTMENT: Student Accessibility Services
SUPERVISOR: Fran Manocchio

SSTA Approver: Fran Manocchio
SCHEDULE: 10-12 hours per week
POSITION LEVEL: Non-Supervisory

General Statement of Duties

The Graduate Student provides essential additional resources for at-risk disabled students. Academic coaching is predicated on a trusting, one-on-one relationship and builds upon student strengths. Within the context of developing and maintaining academic strategies, students learn about and practice self-advocacy. The proposed outcome of this work is student persistence and retention. Two graduate students will increase the capacity of SAS' provision of academic coaching by 35 - 40% per semester.

Responsibilities:

Provide one-on-one academic coaching to at-risk disabled students/students with disabilities

Develop a trusting, one-on-one relationship with students that fosters persistence and retention

Focus on skills and tools necessary for academic success, including but not limited to time management, organization, understanding a syllabus, study skills, test-taking skills, and social skills

Provide support to Gamma Chi, our chapter of the International Honor Society for students with disabilities, specifically to co-facilitate Peer Mentoring training and supervision

Qualifications:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrated empathy with student population (first generation, diverse, multiple and complex disabilities).

Graduate student in good academic standing.

Commitment to the values and goals of Student Accessibility Services and Worcester State University.
