Associate Project Manager, Alzheimer's Disease Research Center

JOB SUMMARY
The Wake Forest University Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (WF ADRC) is seeking a self-starting, detailed-oriented individual with strong communication skills to join our dynamic team as an Associate Project Manager for the Neuropathology Core. This position manages a variety of research and administrative activities for a dynamic national Center that supports interdisciplinary research in healthy brain aging and Alzheimer's disease. The ideal candidate has previous project management and research experience and will work under the direction of the Neuropathology Core Leader of the ADRC.
The WF ADRC is an established, rapidly growing center funded by the National Institute on Aging (NIA). Our research is focused on early intervention and understanding the role of disorders such as hypertension and diabetes in Alzheimer's disease to develop new therapies and prevention strategies. The ADRC provides resources to scientists at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and other institutions to facilitate Alzheimer's disease research. The WF ADRC is part of a network 30+ highly collaborative Alzheimer Disease Research Centers across the U.S. The WF ADRC values teamwork, diversity in perspective, and inclusion of staff and study participants from different backgrounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Health, Basic Science, or a relevant clinical discipline with two years' survey research experience including interviewing, supervision of data collection procedures, and training; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree in a relevant discipline preferred.
- Two or more years of project management or research administration experience in a health science field is recommended
- Ability to perform ADRC research autopsies and split weekend autopsy call coverage with Neuropathology Core Leader and other designated individuals
- Ability to translate project plan decisions into concrete activities and prioritization for project implementation
- Ability to develop and maintain timelines for the completion of tasks related to the implementation of a given milestone
- Experience with submission and management of NIH grants, and experience with writing and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals preferred
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Outlook, Teams), Adobe, and PubMed
- Ability to gather and synthesize data from multiple sources for reporting purposes
- Efficient planning, organizing, and prioritizing of work with strong time management skills and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently; assumes responsibility for timely and accurate completion of tasks and projects
- Ability to work well in a diverse team environment with people at multiple institutional levels
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to tailor communications to various audiences
RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Research and Participant Engagement
- See ADRC research participants in the clinic setting and discuss the brain donation program; obtain consent from participant and next-of-kin for autopsy
- Continuously follow up with participants who have committed to brain donation program
- Be on-call for families when death of participant is imminent or has occurred
- Coordinate with funeral homes, transportation services, participant family members, and attending neuropathologist to arrange for autopsy
- Interface and work with the ADRC Clinical Core and Outreach Recruitment and Education Core to provide education and care for research participants regarding brain donation
ADRC Autopsies and Laboratory Management
- Utilize the electronic medical record system and laboratory software to accession neuropathology research autopsy cases and consults
- Perform research neuropathology autopsies including removal of the brain, spinal cord, eyes, skeletal muscle, and peripheral nerve tissue
- Dissect and process fresh central nervous system tissue from ADRC autopsies according to established biobanking protocols
- Assist the Neuropathology Core Leader with preparing preliminary autopsy reports and distributing reports to relevant parties
- Split weekend autopsy call coverage with Neuropathology Core leader and other designated individuals
- Keep and manage a well-organized database of all banked ADRC autopsy biospecimens
- Manage laboratory inventory and order equipment when needed
- Schedule and set up brain cutting conference with the Neuropathology Core Leader and other participating groups/individuals
Resource Distribution and Reporting
- Facilitate the distribution of WF ADRC resources, including tissue/fluid samples, neuropath data, and funding to researchers at Wake Forest and other institutions
- Create accurate, well-formatted, and customized reports, tables, and spreadsheets
- Assist the Neuropathology Core Leader with reporting ADRC progress to various agencies and stakeholders
- Analyze current systems; make and implement recommendations for process improvement
Grant Support
- Assist the Neuropathology Core Leader with grant writing and grant preparation activities as needed
- Assist in the preparation and submission of manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals
- Help the Neuropathology Core Leader monitor and track budgets; help resolve budget and expense issues related to the NP Core; facilitate budget meetings
Communications and Administrative Support
- Interface with internal and external parties with positive rapport to provide excellent service and promote positive outcomes in Alzheimer's disease research
- Prepare and disseminate information on ADRC Neuropathology research, news, events, and funding opportunities to internal and external audiences
- Serve as a point of contact for the ADRC Neuropathology Core Leader to answer questions, escalating issues as needed
