DEFINITION: The J1 Mentor stipend position is directly responsible to the Superintendent. This position is responsible for knowledge and background information on visa processing for J-1(hired teacher)/J-2 (teacher's dependent) visas, following the rules and regulations mandated by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Assisting in connecting with the J1 visa sponsors in securing DS2019 documents, a controlled document from the Department of State to administer the Exchange Visitor Program, and to ensure that J1 visa teachers are in compliance with sponsorship requirements (e.g., submission of cultural exchange annual reports, application for extension, and change of host school (within District) when necessary. Provide assistance for NV teacher license applications and provisional removals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Performance of these functions is the primary role of this position. Assigned job tasks/duties are not limited to the essential functions).

* Work with Site Administrators in scheduling interviews and participating in interviews.


* When an offer of employment is submitted, will assist candidates in visa processing for J-1(hired teacher)/J-2 (teacher's dependent) visas, following the rules and regulations mandated by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).


* Assisting in connecting with the J1 visa sponsors in securing DS2019 documents,a controlled document from the Department of State to administer the Exchange Visitor Program, and to ensure that J1 visa teachers are in compliance with sponsorship requirements (e.g., submission of cultural exchange annual reports, application for extension, and change of host school (within District) when necessary.


* Provide assistance for NV teacher license applications and provisional removals.


* Assist in finding housing/relocation


* Provide guidance to obtaining a social security number and bank account


* Assists with new hire paperwork once arrived to include District & Site orientation, Benefits, employee handbook, negotiated agreements, due process etc.


* Works with J1 Visa employees to help them understand their rights and responsibilities


* Monthly meeting within J1 community to share ideas and raise concerns pertaining to classroom management, intentional instruction, and self-care


* Explains school wide expectations on school activities, recess duties, emergency response/drills in case an incident happens on the first week of school.


* Orientation on how to use: iXL, NWEA, Clever, My path, Infinite Campus, etc and how to use them in meeting our educational goals.


* Grading system- how to use it, the weights of quizzes, hw, participation, etc.


* Guidelines/protocols to follow in communicating with parents/guardian especially on child's behavior or missing work/assignments


* Opportunity for peer observation, benchmarking classroom management, literacy and blocks


* Opportunity to hear feedback from the school administrator after classroom observation.


* Training on how to interpret MAPs results, SBACS and how to communicate this to families and how use this data for intervention

QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Must possess or be able to acquire a Nevada teaching license issued by the Nevada Department of Education. Certified in relevant subject area.

* Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university with major coursework in education or a related field.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Strength, dexterity, and coordination to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, and stand for long periods of time. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper; occasional lifting of files, stacks of paper or reports, references, and other materials. Some reaching for items above and below desk level. Some reaching, bending, squatting, and stooping to access files and records is necessary. The manual dexterity and cognitive ability to operate a personal computer using word processing and databases. The ability to interact professionally, communicate effectively, and exchange information accurately with all internal and external customers. Light lifting (up to 25 pounds) is occasionally required.
