Regional Underwriting Director

Job Description:
The Regional Underwriting Director will collaborate with underwriting department leadership to execute strategic initiatives and meet financial goals, supporting the company’s revenue and profitability objectives. This role is responsible for driving production results across the Northeast and Midwest territories (or “the region”), overseeing the growth of the production pipeline and ensuring the retention of key accounts.
This role will lead efforts to identify new production sources, develop relationships with brokers and capture new business. In addition to these growth initiatives, the director will manage a team of underwriters, providing guidance and leadership to ensure the region's underwriting standards and long-term profitability goals are met.
Responsibilities:
- Lead business production efforts, ensuring overall production success in the region.
- Develop a strategy to build the region's production pipeline, focusing on long-term growth and profitability.
- Establish relationships with life sciences brokers to support new business submissions and retain existing clients.
- Identify new production sources and target accounts and coordinate production activities with the team, including broker outreach and events.
- Manage underwriters and oversee their day-to-day operations of the assigned unit.
- Mentor and develop the team, providing career growth opportunities and support.
- Assign special projects, manage workflow and collaborate with senior leadership to execute strategic priorities and monitor revenue and expense budgets.
- Participate in the hiring process and lead orientation for new team members.
- Oversee performance management, monitor market conditions and suggest strategy changes to the Vice President of Underwriting Operations and Risk Management.
- Underwrite a select book of accounts, analyze risks for new and renewal business.
- Analyze risks for new and renewal business within approved authority and make decisions to accept, modify or decline business in line with regulatory and underwriting guidelines, supporting the company's profitability objectives.
- Collaborate with other departments such as claims and risk management to ensure value-added services for insureds.
- Lead or participate in department, cross-departmental and organization-wide projects as directed by management.
- Cultivate strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring timely communication as needed.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, business, insurance, or a related field; advanced degrees or insurance designations (preferred), or a minimum of eight years of related experience for candidates without a degree.
- 8+ years in a casualty environment with at least four years of experience in life sciences products liability required.
- 5+ years of leadership or supervisory experience.
- Completion of “Leadership That Works – Tier I” within 12 months of hire.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to manage competing priorities.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to motivate, coach, train and develop staff. Willingness to travel, attend insurance and industry/business functions to promote and present a positive image of the company.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and in high-pressure environments.
- Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills.
