Sports Director

The State Director for the American Youth Sports Federation (AYSF) is responsible for leading, managing, and growing youth sports activities within their assigned state. This dynamic role involves recruiting and training coaches, organizing and managing sports events and tournaments, building relationships with local schools and communities, and ensuring that the federation’s programs adhere to high standards of quality, safety, and inclusivity.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for youth development through sports, strong leadership and organizational skills, and experience in managing large-scale events or sports programs. The State Director will act as the primary ambassador of AYSF in their state, promoting the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, and athletic excellence.
Key Responsibilities
1. Coach Recruitment and Development
• Recruitment: Identify, recruit, and onboard volunteer and paid coaches for the youth sports programs in soccer, basketball, baseball, football, track and field, and other sports as applicable.
• Training and Development: Organize and lead coaching clinics and training sessions to ensure coaches are equipped with the skills necessary to teach and mentor young athletes. Provide continuing education and updates on AYSF’s guidelines, sportsmanship policies, and safety procedures.
• Compliance: Ensure all coaches comply with state regulations, including background checks, safety certifications (such as CPR and first aid), and adherence to the AYSF code of conduct.
2. Event and Program Management
• Event Planning: Plan, schedule, and oversee all AYSF sports events, including games, tournaments, clinics, camps, and exhibitions across the state.
• Venue Management: Secure facilities and venues for events, ensuring that they are safe, accessible, and properly equipped for multi-sport use.
• Logistics: Coordinate all logistical elements of events, including scheduling, transportation, equipment, and volunteer management.
• Participation Growth: Develop strategies to increase player registration and expand participation in various sports programs throughout the state.
• Event Promotion: Work with local communities, schools, and media to promote events and encourage community involvement and attendance.
3. Community Engagement
• Partnership Building: Develop and maintain relationships with local schools, community centers, sports clubs, and other stakeholders to foster collaboration and increase awareness of AYSF programs.
• Sponsorship and Fundraising: Assist in securing local sponsorships and organizing fundraising activities to support the federation’s growth and ensure sustainability of programs.
• Parent and Player Communication: Act as the point of contact for parents, guardians, and participants. Address concerns, provide information about programs, and ensure that communication is clear and effective.
4. Administration and Compliance
• Budget Management: Work with the National Director to develop and manage the state budget for all sports programs and events, ensuring the efficient use of resources.
• Data and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of participant registrations, coach certifications, and event outcomes. Provide regular reports to the National Director on the progress of programs and initiatives.
• Compliance: Ensure that all programs adhere to local, state, and national laws and regulations, particularly concerning youth safety, facility use, and nonprofit reporting standards.
5. Leadership and Representation
• Staff Supervision: Manage state-level staff, including administrative personnel, assistant directors, and event coordinators. Provide ongoing guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations.
• Representation: Serve as the primary representative for the AYSF within the state, promoting the organization’s mission and values. Attend meetings, conferences, and events as necessary to raise the profile of the organization and its programs.
• Crisis Management: Respond to and manage any crises, such as injuries or disputes, that occur during AYSF events, ensuring that all incidents are handled with professionalism and care.
Qualifications
Required
• Experience in Sports Management: Minimum of 5 years of experience in youth sports administration, coaching, event management, or a related field.
• Leadership Skills: Proven experience in managing teams, organizing large events, and overseeing multiple projects simultaneously.
• Communication: Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to work effectively with coaches, parents, athletes, and community stakeholders.
• Organizational Skills: Demonstrated ability to manage logistics, budgets, and schedules with precision.
• Passion for Youth Development: Commitment to fostering a positive, safe, and inclusive environment for young athletes to thrive.
• Computer Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and event management software.
Preferred
• Experience working with non-profit organizations and a knowledge of 501(c)(3) requirements.
• Familiarity with the specific sports offered by AYSF (basketball, football, soccer, etc.).
• Fundraising or Sponsorship Experience: Background in securing local sponsors and organizing fundraising efforts.

• Flexibility: Adaptable to changing circumstances, schedules, and program needs in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Work Conditions
• Travel: Extensive in-state travel is required to attend events, meetings, and recruit coaches. Occasional out-of-state travel may be needed for national AYSF conferences or meetings.
• Schedule: Flexible, with some evening and weekend work required, especially during sports seasons and event days.
• Physical Requirements: The position may require physical activity such as setting up events, overseeing games, and assisting in youth sports activities.
