The primary purpose of this position is to underwrite new business and renewals in a profitable manner and according to authority level and established guidelines, and participate in special projects having an impact on the business. Assigned larger and more important agents/brokers. Utilize underwriting tools to determine accurate classifications, rates, and premium charges. Understand state laws, including cancellation and non-renewal, within assigned territory to properly transact business within each state. Knowledgeable in coverage forms and policy language; appropriate utilization of forms and exclusions. Assist with resolving premium audit disputes within assigned agents/brokers. Able to provide coaching to others.

Markel Specialty Retail - West is seeking an Underwriter with a focus on Inland Marine to join our team.

What you'll be doing:

  1. Reviewing, analyzing, accepting, and declining inland marine risks to ensure profitability for Markel.
  2. Communicating with underwriting management on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and to make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate.
  3. Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit.
  4. Review submissions and identify exposure and risk from information provided.
  5. Underwrite renewal business review terms, conditions and pricing and handle related account servicing.
  6. Monitor producers for profitability and production.
  7. Monitor results of the overall book of business assigned; and recommend corrective action as necessary.
  8. Develop and maintain productive relationships within assigned region and product line management.
  9. Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.
  10. Cross-sell opportunities with other Markel divisions through the promotion of Markel’s products and services.
  11. Coordinate with other Markel platforms on common accounts.
  12. Travel within the West Retail region.

What we're looking for:

  1. Minimum 5+ years of current experience underwriting profitable Admitted inland marine or related business (position title will depend upon experience);
  2. Bachelor’s degree and industry designations (proven, outstanding experience can be substituted for education);
  3. Proven outstanding reputation with wholesale and retail distribution;
  4. Knowledge of pricing accounts using loss rating and actuarial modeling tools/techniques;
  5. Ability to work in a fast paced environment;
  6. Proven excellent customer service skills;
  7. Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility;
  8. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills;
  9. Superb MS Office and underwriting system skills;
  10. Strong analytical and organizational skills;
  11. Must be a team player that enjoys a flexible and spontaneous business environment.
