The Bell, in collaboration with Chalkbeat New York, seeks an Executive Producer to direct the production of the second season of P.S. Weekly, a short-form, youth-led podcast featuring news and commentary about the New York City school system. This unique podcast collaboration between a local newsroom and high school journalists, will give 10 student interns the opportunity to share youth perspectives on the stories that matter most to them. The show will serve as a valuable information source for students, educators, public school parents and policymakers in the nation’s largest school system.


The ideal candidate will be an experienced, enthusiastic producer who’s ready to take on a leadership role and to share their passion for audio storytelling with a new generation of creators. The EP will ultimately be responsible for a polished and professional-sounding finished product, but they will give space to the students to make the podcast their own. The EP should hold students to a high standard while also recognizing that this is a learning opportunity. Positivity, patience and flexibility are essential in this role.


The EP will work alongside The Bell’s team of youth development professionals, who have extensive experience managing student-led podcast programs, and Chalkbeat NY's talented team of reporters and editors who provide expert coverage of local schools.


Key Responsibilites
  • Lead weekly production meeting between The Bell and Chalkbeat to select upcoming stories and plan a workflow
  • Manage student interns and delegate production roles (in collaboration with The Bell’s staff), with contingency plans in case of unforeseen absences or other production hiccups
  • Give hands-on editorial guidance and assistance as students outline, research/report, script, narrate, and mix each episode
  • Sign off on podcast scripts and make final mixes
  • Provide ongoing support and advice for student host/s and other team members
  • Create and maintain the production schedule
  • Provide other consulting / advice as needed


Qualifications
  • At least three years experience in audio storytelling with at least one year leading production on a podcast or radio program
  • Highly organized, with experience structuring projects in a way that equips the team to do its best work
  • Proficiency with audio editing using Hindenburg Pro and recording high-quality field tape with Zoom H5 recorders
  • Creative thinker; organized, yet flexible; able to roll with the punches and stay positive
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Strong journalistic judgment and integrity
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Deep understanding/knowledge of the digital media landscape + avid podcast consumer
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in equal measure


Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience teaching or working with teenagers
  • Prior experience leading production on podcast collaborations involving two or more organizations
  • Video production and social media marketing skills
  • Strong familiarity with NYC public schools, the local policy landscape and education news ecosystem


Hours and Location
  • This is a 6-month full-time contract position based at The Bell’s office in lower Manhattan. Required in person Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. with the opportunity for remote work on other days of the week.


Compensation and Benefits
  • $6,000 - $7,000 per month, depending on experience. This position does not provide health or retirement benefits.
  • This is a grant-funded role with the potential to grow into a full-time staff position with full benefits.
