SWITCHER / TRAILER TECHNICIAN

Job Summary

This position is responsible for the routine maintenance, diagnostics and repair on all switchers, trailers and related equipment. To succeed in this role, one should have a solid knowledge of basic mechanic’s tools, service, and diagnostic equipment, as well as strong attention to detail, excellent communication, and customer service skills, and be able to work independently or as a team member.

Mechanic Responsibilities

  • Aptitude in using various hand tools, power tools and precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers)
  • Maintains, diagnoses, and repairs a variety of equipment including; diesel/gasoline engines, air compressors, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, gearboxes, PTOs, generators, 12/24-volt electrical systems, Drive train systems, cabs and controls, chassis and suspension, rims, tires and wheels, forklifts, Air systems.
  • Execute required procedures for preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Perform inspections required by the company.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting with electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Read and follow the repair manual.
  • Perform repairs as listed in manuals
  • Operate and maintain power equipment.
  • Order parts as necessary for equipment with prior approval.
  • Install and/or replace new or reconditioned repair parts.
  • Basic testing of equipment for proper operation.
  • Complete proper paperwork as assigned.
  • May be required to assist other maintenance employees.
  • Use a J pro system for troubleshooting and regen on Switchers / Yard trucks
  • Inspect, analyze, and diagnose trailers and related equipment for mechanical issues, faulty and replacement parts.
  • Perform requested repairs according to industry standard
  • Perform routine maintenance on trailers and related equipment.
  • Perform trailer body work and under-carriage work (e.g. air bag replacement, cross-members, dolly legs, tandem system)
  • Problem solve and document an action plan for all repairs and follow checklists and protocols while conducting repairs.
  • Ensure a safe, organized, and tidy workspace, including regularly cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Follow all health and safety rules and guidelines, as well as common sense safety practices.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as support coworkers, able to work as part of team and work well with co-workers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge-Based Requirements

  • ASE certifications highly desired but not required.
  • 1-2 years of mechanical or equivalent experience (Denoted below*).

*Class A Mechanic = 5+ yrs experience. *Class B Mechanic = 3-5 yrs experience. *Class C Mechanic = 1-3 yrs experience.

  • Able to pass pre-employment knowledge/skill test to determine probability of job success and mechanical classification.
  • Proven mechanical acuity and basic math skills.
  • Must be able to read and write in English, as required for documentation of diagnosis and solutions.
  • Must have own tools plus Safety Glasses, Steel-toed shoes, and Hearing Protection.
  • Able to pass 10-year background check.
  • Able to pass drug test/medical physical exam

Physical Demands/Abilities performed throughout the duration of the work shift:

  • Heavy Work- Exerting up to 100lbs of force occasionally and/or up to 50lbs of force frequently or up to 20lbs of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including other job-related items.
  • Walking/Standing for sustained periods of time.
  • Climbing – Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using entire body
  • Stooping/Crouching – Bending body downward and forward by bending at the waist, legs, and spine.
  • Balancing – Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
  • Kneeling/Crawling – Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s) or moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Whole Hand/Fingers – Picking, pinching, typing with fingers and grasping with the fingers and palm.
  • Repetitive Motion – Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Talking – Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to others accurately and quickly when necessary.
  • Hearing – Receiving detailed information through oral communication at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  • Vision – Close visual acuity to perform activities such as reading, using measurement devices, viewing electronic devices, assembling, inspecting small parts and/or operating machines and power tools, operate a motor vehicle and determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work performed.

Work Environment: Work is performed in a shop; both indoors and outdoors. Activities occur inside and outside and are subject to work environments that are not climate controlled, weather, and hot/cold temperature changes, dirt, dust, soot and possibly mold, loud noise, and ladders to use for high heights. Potential hazards such as moving vehicles, proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, high places, high heat, and exposure to chemicals, atmospheric conditions (e.g. fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases), or poor ventilation, or a workspace may be exposed to smoke residue, mold and mildew, contaminated water, or other unsanitary conditions as well as being in closed quarters/confined spaces (e.g. crawl spaces, small, enclosed rooms, attics, etc.)
