Job Summary:

This position is responsible for the automation technical support of multiple production lines which manufacture precision optical products and solutions. Working closely with different facets of production, the Automation Engineer will support production departments using extensive knowledge of automation production principles and techniques. This will also include troubleshooting processes and equipment issues, contributing to tooling and fixture design, performing optical testing, generating process documentation and developing correlating work instructions.

Summary of Essential Job Duties:

  • Support production departments using extensive knowledge of automation production principles and techniques.
  • Monitor and adjust automation equipment as needed to ensure quality of produced product.
  • Support production tooling change over and automation re-configuration keeping pace with manufacturing schedule.
  • Contribute to tooling and fixture design and implementation to support new products, leveraging existing and new automation assets.
  • Assist with programming and teaching of robotic and related systems to accommodate new products and process.
  • Identify critical parameters and statistically analyze production metrics in order to drive data-based decisions.
  • Assist in installation and calibration of automated equipment.
  • Perform basic electrical troubleshooting.
  • Responsible for the efficient operation of manufacturing processes within the facility.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong trouble shooting skills to diagnose and correct production failures.
  • Procure or design fixtures which aid assembly of parts to increase repeatability, reduce scrap and reduce cycle time.
  • Summarize data and present to Management in a clear and concise manner.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of manufacturing projects and capital improvements.
  • Facilitate the definition of project scope, goals and deliverables.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of coworkers including assemblers, technicians, engineers and managers.
  • Responsible for transition of manufacturing processes from engineering / prototype stage to volume production.
  • Work with quality assurance to ensure specifications are met and documentation is in place prior to shipment of product.
  • Apply knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the optics manufacturing field.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements and Competencies:

  • Read and Interpret (and preferably create) mechanical drawings, electrical and pneumatic schematics, other technical documentation.
  • Hands-on skills with electro-mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of dimensional metrology to ensure tooling is set up to yield product within acceptable tolerances.
  • Ability to inspect and measure components with precision to confirm tooling setup.
  • Able to work safely around systems with multiple sources of energy (LOTO)
  • Universal Robots Polyscope
  • ABB Robot Studio and RAPID language
  • Familiar with CAD/CAM (preferably SolidWorks, MasterCAM)
  • Able to read & write G&M code for 3&4 axis CNC milling machines.
  • Familiarity with FDM 3D Printing.
  • Familiarity with Python a plus
  • Embedded controls
  • Injection molding background is a plus.

Experience/Certifications/Degrees Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing, industrial, electrical or mechanical engineering with 5+ years’ experience with automation engineering.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience in electro-mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) methods.
  • Proficient with 3D modeling methods and 3D printing. Solidworks preferred.
  • Proficient with MS Excel software is required. Filemaker Pro and Minitab a plus.
  • Extensive Lean manufacturing knowledge, six sigma black belt, or green belt certification a plus.
  • Experience working with customers on a technical level.
  • Experience with ISO 9001 standards is preferred.
  • Experienced in ITAR regulations, specifications, and company compliance including, but not limited to, optics, mechanics, quality, verification, and testing is preferred.

Language Skills:

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents. Ability to communicate effectively to team members and management.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts.

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s in engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical or Industrial) degree required.
  • Master’s in engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Electrical or Industrial) a plus.
  • 5+ years’ experience in a manufacturing environment with a focus on automation.

  • Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
  • Safety glasses are required on the manufacturing floor. The noise level in this work environment is loud and requires hearing protection. Personal protection equipment will be provided.
  • Some areas may require area specific safety training.
  • The job may involve prolong periods of sitting/standing.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May involve prolonged periods of magnified inspection (eye strain)
  • The employee is frequently required to use the computer.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand: use hands to fingers, handle or feel: and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch: and talk and hear.
