Overview:  Nomad Global Communications Solutions (Nomad GCS) is a leading provider of advanced interoperable communication solutions for disaster response, tactical operations, mobile telemetry, and medical command centers. We serve customers within the state and federal government, as well as private sector customers worldwide. Our mission is to provide seamless solutions when every second matters.


The Hardware Engineer IV - NTC applies multidiscipline engineering, research, and development principles to design and develop new product platforms and technology. Basic responsibilities include use of unique applications of existing technology and engineering to rapidly develop and deliver new product platforms and systems in state-of-the-art custom engineered solutions and/or products to order. Hardware Engineer also provides lifecycle systems engineering support including requirements generation, risk mitigation, test planning, integration planning, and configuration management. Engineer will be responsible for developing and delivering multiple, special projects annually. Position will require some travel.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Plan & Analyze
    • Review and evaluate product proposals from both internal and external customers to determine feasibility, producibility, costs, delivery time, production time.
    • Discuss proposals with customer representatives, engineers, NTC team members, and other personnel.
    • Formulate elaborate conceptual designs based on proposals to meet customer requirements.
  • Coordinate
    • Coordinate complex design, production, testing and related activities with appropriate personnel.
    • Confer with Engineering and IT staff to evaluate interface between hardware and software and operational and performance requirements of overall system.
  • Innovate
    • Research industry standards and develop sophisticated new products and procedures that ensure competitive advantages.
    • Make complex recommendations for product changes or services to better fulfill customer needs for market competitiveness.
    • Design and implement improved products, processes, or operational policies based on feedback from customers.
    • Design and develop new innovate product offerings.
    • Be responsible for participating in the scoping, scheduling, and coordination of the technical aspects of new product development.
    • Assist in specifying any hardware or communications equipment required for the control systems or micro-controller hardware as applicable.
  • Build & Assemble
    • Build and/or modify:
      • embedded software for micro-controlled hardware (Modules) and sensors;
      • software for Control Systems (Central Node);
      • software and system architecture for Content Delivery and Distribution systems including, but not limited to, Encoders and CDNs; and
      • software/communication libraries and communication protocols including, but not limited to, communication between Modules, Central Nodes, Sensors, and 3rd party control systems.
    • Assemble and modify existing pieces of equipment and software to meet complex needs.
  • Test
    • Test and verify software to ensure that it meets specifications and requirements, analyzing and recording test data.
  • Document
    • Create, prepare, and write SOP’s and technical manuals that correspond to the developed product.
    • Create, prepare, and write systematic documentation needed to support, reproduce, and troubleshoot issues with each respective product.
    • Maintain copies of current and revised software for modules, Sensors and Central Nodes on the Nomad GCS files server.
  • Train
    • Provide internal and external training and literature for newly developed products and technologies.
    • Conduct “certification” training on new procedures, as necessary.
  • Support
    • Provide delivery assistance, technical troubleshooting, product installations, and warranty work on sophisticated projects.
    • Assist in arranging direct delivery, training and installation of products and equipment as needed, providing expertise in the complex concepts, practice, and procedures utilized to operate the equipment.
    • Consult with clients to resolve complicated problems and to provide ongoing support.
    • Serve in a troubleshooting capacity related to product equipment malfunction.
  • Production
    • Support the production process by creating the logic, testing, troubleshooting, and installing the hardware.

Accountabilities:

Satisfy the above responsibilities on a quarterly basis. Additionally:

  • Effectively serve as a team lead by coaching and mentoring, providing constructive feedback, and contributing to the success of Hardware Engineers at levels I through III; escalation of insurmountable roadblocks.
  • Complete system design hardware for future iterations of the NTC platform and related products.
  • Work with software engineers to log all NTC hardware activities and create the necessary logic flows to control NTC features and functions.
  • Complete in a timely manner tasks pursuant to agreed-to Sprint requirements in a high-quality manner.
  • Actively participate in NTC meetings and demonstrate effective communication.
  • Arrive and departure from work within standard office hours and be responsive outside of such hours as needed.

Required Education / Experience: 

Education / Experience:

  • MS in Engineering and 5+ years’ experience in electrical engineering or similar

or

  • BS in Engineering or related field and 7+ years’ experience in electrical engineering or similar

or

  • High school degree and 11+ years’ experience in electrical engineering or similar

 

Employment Experience:

  • 4+ years’ experience serving as team lead of at least 3 engineers
  • 6+ years’ experience with microcontrollers and electrical or mechanical engineering
  • Development of multiple hardware applications
  • Expert understanding of microcontroller programming
  • 4+ years’ experience electrical drafting, technical writing, and technological designs
  • Expert understanding of web application function, Linux, and Windows OS
  • Working knowledge of NodeJS, JavaScript, React, and/or similar programming
  • Working knowledge of relational database systems and Object Orientated Programming

Promotion & Compensation Increases:

Advancement based on:

  • achieving at least “Meets Expectations” in the two most recent quarterly reviews, with “Exceeds Expectations” in at least 25% of the categories for both reviews
  • completing at least 80 hours while in grade of continuing software education courses and participating in conferences, workshops, and hackathons.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to use hands and arms to finger, handle, feel, reach, or operate objects, tools, or controls.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job including close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish individual colors.

Working Environment:

  • The work environment is a partially environmentally controlled indoor environment. Depending upon the time of year, temperatures can fluctuate between 60F and 100F but is typically around 70F. There are times when working outside will be required.
  • The employee may be subjected to noise levels, ranging from low volume to loud and will be required to wear provided safety hearing devices from time to time, which will be provided.
  • All Team Members must wear provided OSHA approved eye protection at all times in manufacturing areas. The employee will be required to wear provided safety eyewear throughout the performance of their duties.
