Job DescriptionJob DescriptionThe Substance Abuse Clinician provides quality orientation, substance abuse counseling, life skills, and psychoeducation according to the Behavioral Health Services Program's established policies and procedures.Essential Functions
  • Provides counseling, therapy, and/or psychotherapy to substance abuse consumers appropriate to the position; prepares Person Center Plans, Discharge Plans, and Follow-up care program; provides therapeutic crisis intervention and emergency services as required.
  • Collects data about patients through interview, case history, psychological tests, and/or observational therapeutic approach.
  • Consults with agency mental health therapist and related professional and paraprofessional's staff, as appropriate service agencies as required.
  • Provide and/or arranges for therapeutic interventions as appropriate for consumers in a crisis and for those with serious disturbance problems.
  • Refers consumers to appropriate social service agencies for financial and other required services; may conduct home visits in consumer home to provide counseling and outreach services.
  • Provides daily group sessions.
  • Maintain quality control of medical records and assist with program audits.
  • Appropriately documents clinical and administrative work in a timely manner.
  • Represents the program and agency to the greater community and other agencies.
  • Serves as a professional role model while maintaining a leadership role to the consumers.
  • Perform these and any other related duties assigned by the Clinical Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and ability to perform the 12 Core Functions.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
  • Knowledge of the code of the code of ethics specific to North Carolina Professional Substance Abuse Practice Board, the understanding that this code will guide professional and clinical behavior.
  • Knowledge of developing, monitoring PCP's.
  • Knowledge of psychotropic, HIV/AIDS and other medications.
  • Knowledge and ability of using the ASAM Criteria.
  • Knowledge and ability to diagnosis using the DSM IV.
  • Skills in preparing and maintaining consumer medical records.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to consumer's rights.
  • Ability to perform supervised urine screens.
  • Knowledge of self-care.
  • Comfortable with working with diverse ethnic and cultural groups.
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to be flexible to work schedule, which may include working evenings, and being on-call.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent communication skills.
Education and Experience
  • Masters in a Human Services field + 1 yr of full-time, post-graduate degree SA experience; or Bachelors+ 2 yrs of full-time, post-degree SA experience
  • Experience with screening procedures to determine appropriateness for services, clinical intakes, diagnostic substance abuse assessments, individual/group/couples, and family therapy, with the substance abuse and co- occurring population.
  • LCAS or similar required
Work Environment:
  • Work is usually performed in a typical interior/office, group room environment, or consumer's home.
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals. In the event if a consumer's environment is some degree of risk, caution should be taken and Clinical Director and/or another staff person will assist staff.
  • Universal Precaution should be use at all times.
