Join our community The Health Information Management (HIM) Technician position is responsible for the release of information function in accordance with Federal and State laws, as well as hospital policy and procedure, admission of patients, birth certificate completion, maintaining knowledge and understanding of duties related to the processing of outpatient records, filing, retrieval, archiving, and computer input. The individual in this position reports to the Director of Patient Financial Services. This position works closely with all HIM staff in order to ensure records are released, processed and maintained in accordance with State and Federal regulations.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Maintains confidentiality of the medical records, reports and organization business.
  2. Acts proficiently and courteously.
  3. Receives, files, retrieves, analyzes and routes outpatient and ancillary records within the Samaritan Hospital system.
  4. Notifies Outpatient Department of missing records.
  5. Prepares records for Coders.
  6. Demonstrates knowledge of the rules and regulations regarding legal procedures.
  7. Retrieves medical records for continued patient care, committee meetings, Quality Improvement activities, QIO, etc, if needed.
  8. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in maintenance of files and indices.
  9. Performs general office and clerical duties (i.e. answer phones, distribute mail and maintain general office supplies). Operates office equipment.
  10. Locates and transports charts to E.R. and nursing stations as needed.
  11. Knowledge of State rules and regulations regarding birth certificate completions. Knowledge of the rules and regulations regarding legal procedures for the release of medical information and patient privacy.
  12. Records accurate information in the birth log and keeps monthly birth statistics.
  13. Maintains fetal monitor strips.
  14. Knowledge and proficiency in maintenance of files and indices. Performs archiving duties as required.
  15. Performs notary functions.
  16. Prepares Paternity Affidavits/Support Enforcement forms for state offices.
  17. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  18. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  19. Ensures self-compliance with organization policies and procedures, as well as labor agreements.
  20. Ensures the interface with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive with the organization’s values.
  21. Conducts self in a professional manner and ensures personal appearance meets the standards necessary to perform the job function while representing the organization.
  22. Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required by management, be handled in a manner necessary to meet organizational standards.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school diploma or GED. Associates degree preferred.
  2. One to two-years hospital or medical office release of information experience.
  3. Medical terminology preferred.
  4. Must be able to operate personal computer, calculator, fax machine, microfiche or microfilm reader/printer, and photocopier.
  5. Basic Life Support Heartsaver (HS) level to be completed within three (3) months of hire.

  4. Demonstrates competency in ability to care for customers/patients across the age continuum.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Occasional standing, walking, lifting, reaching, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling.
  2. Good reading eyesight.
  3. Ability to communicate using verbal and/or written skills for accurate exchange of information with physicians, nurses, health care professionals, patients and/or family, and the public.

This is a Per Diem position, working variable hours and days a week. This will be a hybrid position with potential to be fully remote
