Position Summary:

The Director of Immigration Legal Services holds primary responsibility for the comprehensive management and oversight of our immigration legal services program. This pivotal role entails providing strategic direction, ensuring the delivery of top-tier legal services, and overseeing a team of attorneys and support staff. The Director will develop and enact program objectives, policies, and procedures while upholding legal and ethical standards. Building and nurturing partnerships with community stakeholders, funders, and allies to bolster program growth and sustainability are also key components of this position.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position entails managing up to 15 staff members and coordinating with 10-20 volunteers.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the development and supervision of immigration legal services catering to the immigrant communities of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Program Officer to align program directives with agency goals outlined in the Strategic Plan.
  • Foster a culturally competent environment by developing policies, procedures, and literature that reflect cultural sensitivity.
  • Manage a diverse team including the Legal Services Program Manager, Senior Staff Attorney, Immigration Attorneys, DOJ Accredited Representatives, Paralegal, Legal Assistants, and relevant program staff across offices in Oakland, Richmond, and Concord.
  • Set and monitor performance objectives for each team member, conducting annual performance evaluations and implementing improvement plans as necessary.
  • Implement best practices across all sites, establish policies and procedures in line with industry standards, and uphold a culture of continuous quality improvement through regular evaluation and analysis.
  • Coordinate training initiatives to maintain accreditation for DOJ representatives and compliance with continuing legal education requirements for attorneys.
  • Act as a liaison between internal programs, external stakeholders, and community partners as appropriate.
  • Represent the agency at various community functions and events, facilitating engagement and collaboration.
  • Attend and facilitate community meetings, administrative gatherings, and program leadership team sessions.
  • Schedule and facilitate regular legal team case rounds.
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and supervision of legal volunteers.
  • Assume major financial and administrative responsibilities crucial to program success and agency well-being.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Department to track revenues and expenses, review financial statements, and manage budget allocations within approved guidelines.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree and completion of 40+ hours of immigration law training.
  • Registered member in good standing with the California Bar Association, authorized to practice law in California.
  • Minimum of 3 years of direct immigration law experience and 3 years of administrative and management support in a professional setting.
  • Proven leadership skills with a focus on coordinating outreach efforts for legal services and engaging with community partners.
  • Commitment to client empowerment and experience in recruiting, supervising, and training volunteers.
  • Strong analytical abilities, adept at processing large volumes of data and prioritizing tasks.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and database software.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance.
  • Experience serving clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
