The HVAC Engineer applies knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and practices in the design of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for building projects. The HVAC engineer has responsibility for using engineering techniques, theory, principles, and practices in a specialized engineering field.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design and specifications of HVAC systems.
  • Assist in the preparation of designs in Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Systems include placing devices, notes, and drawing in AutoCAD/Revit.
  • Assist project team members with project deliverables and deadlines.
  • Read/Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated reports.
  • Prepare calculations to establish appropriate sizing for infrastructure, equipment, and distribution.
  • Research, verify, review, and become familiar with local, state, and national code requirements.
  • Create bidding scope and documents to distribute to mechanical and electrical contractors.
  • Participate in project meetings during all phases of project.
  • Review contractor submittals to determine conformance with contract documents.
  • Evaluate, select, and apply engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria required on assigned projects.
  • Perform energy calculations comparing new and existing equipment/systems.
  • Other duties, such as development of associated building improvement measures, as assigned.
  • Client Facility Badging may be required (needs vary by Client).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite.
  • AutoCAD/Revit experience desired.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and clients.
  • High level of organization and attention to detail.

Educational/Certification Requirement

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT)/Professional Engineering (PE) path preferred.

Required Experience

  • Experience with design of education and/or government HVAC projects highly desired.
  • Energy Engineering experience a plus.
  • Mechanical internship(s) a plus
  • Ideal candidate would have at least 5 years of experience and be willing to learn/train on required software (independent learning will be required).

Work Environment

  • This position requires most of the work to be accomplished in an office environment.

Physical demands

  • This position requires sitting for periods of time at a computer with the freedom to walk around office when necessary; occasional phone, copy machine, and other office machine use; participate in teleconferences using a headset/earpiece and lifting to 25 lbs. as needed.
  • This position will require site visits that will include climbing roof access ladders, walking around campuses, climbing stairs, and kneeling to avoid mechanical system piping.
