Description: Position Purpose The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes in accordance with the mission of the facility. Prepare patients for surgical procedures, monitors and cares for patients post-operatively and prepares patients for discharge. Responsible for conducting business and patient care activities consistent with the ASC’s policy for Patient’s Rights and Responsibilities without discriminating against the individual because of sex, age, race or religion or any other potentially discriminating factor. Responsible for the discrete and confidential handling of all patient information whether written or spoken, and to be ever vigilant and sensitive to where and how any patient information is shared. Interpersonal Relationships As a representative of ADSC, all comments, attitudes, actions and behaviors have a direct effect on the facility’s image and perceptions of quality service. Interaction with patients, family members, physicians, referral sources, affiliating schools, visitors, etc. must be in a manner that is friendly, supportive, courteous, respectful, cooperative, and professional. This behavior should promote an atmosphere of teamwork congruent with facility standards and guidelines to promote positive relations, and set an example for the staff. Essential Position Responsibilities A. Job Knowledge 1. Assesses, plans, evaluates and ensures the implementation of the patient’s care to achieve identified outcomes a. Assesses patient status on admission and an ongoing basis b. Implements appropriate standards of care based on assessment data and patient’s own goals. Goals are mutually set with the patient and family c. Coordinates nursing interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge d. Ensures provision of patient care daily in an organized and timely manner e. Adheres to facility policies and procedures when providing patient care f. Utilizes nursing care standards when planning and implementing patient care g. Demonstrates ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations h. Assesses learning needs according to patient’s level of understanding and readiness to learn 2. Assumes a leadership role in the provision of quality nursing care for patients receiving care a. Analyzes nursing care provided in the facility related to the established standards of care b. Participates in the monitoring and evaluation of nursing care provided c. Demonstrates ability to coordinate the nursing care provided in the facility d. Assigns patient responsibilities based on patient care needs e. Assumes charge nurse responsibility as assigned f. Demonstrates ability to make decisions concerning facility-based problems g. Participates on quality council to facilitate improvement of nursing care and achievement of the mission of the facility, as requested h. Participates in the orientation of nursing staff i. Participates in developing standardized patient education programs, as requested 3. Demonstrates continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective a. Displays an understanding of each patient’s cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturity in the assessments, treatment and care undertaken b. Appropriately modifies approach to the patient based upon patient age utilizing a developmental perspective c. Provides appropriate interventions related to safety issues 4. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competencies of designated skills identified for position 5. Participates in patient care activities and adheres to requirements of RN job description when providing patient care as evidenced by: a. Admission assessment upon patient’s arrival b. Documents response to nursing action c. Treats patients and family with courtesy, respect and professionalism d. Provides pre and post-operative instructions, verbal and written to the patient’s understanding e. Stocks unit, checks crash and malignant hyperthermia cart and counts narcotics f. Follow up phone calls and cards are sent to patients. Documents per unit policy. Follow surgery schedule and anticipates patient’s arrival g. Responsible for patient’s admission and pre-op care, holistic preparation for surgery considering all needs utilizing preference cards h. Documents all unusual occurrences and post-operative complications for QI follow up i. Frequent ongoing assessment of patient’s condition j. Prompt administration of pain and anesthesia nausea medications when indicated 6. Quality and Customer Service a. Works enthusiastically as a member of a team b. Maintains active professional relationships with doctors and patients by assessing needs and levels of satisfaction with ASC services c. Make every effort to appease dissatisfied medical staff and/or patients d. Explains ASC policy and routine to patients so misunderstandings do not occur 7. Employee Management a. Demonstrates the ability to work well with other employees and assist in new employee training b. Assists in welcoming new employees and helping with orientation when appropriate c. Directs ancillary staff members to achieve the daily need of the department d. Encourages fellow employees to be productive when patient care activities are slow e. Maintains confidentiality for which they are privileged 8. Resource and Inventory Management a. Ensures proper use of resources (time and supplies) b. Careful use of supplies and medicines to avoid waste c. Reports to charge nurse when supplies are low and need ordering d. Keeps accurate time records e. Stocks units with supplies/drugs as needed f. Helps keep supplies neat and organized 9. Regulatory Compliance a. Complies with state rules/regulations, AAAHC and the Joint Commission standards b. 100% of regulatory concerns or unusual occurrences are reported to supervisor nurse within 24 hours of occurrence c. When patient injury or disaster occurs, administration is notified immediately d. RN license and ACLS certification kept current and on file at the ASC 10. Safety a. Maintain unit in safe condition as evidenced by clear hallways, secured electrical wiring and reporting of broken equipment promptly. Adheres to all facility safety regulations and guidelines regarding patient safety b. Attends monthly staff meeting as documented in attendance records c. Identifies, corrects and reports unsafe conditions immediately B. Productivity 1. Follows established policies and procedures with regard to attendance a. Maintains attendance according to guidelines and policy established by facility b. Adheres to tardiness policy c. Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established departmental procedures as noted by supervisor d. Requests scheduled time off according to procedure as noted by supervisor 2. Utilizes time effectively 3. Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up-to-date information in accordance with established standards 4. Adheres to established facility safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment a. Demonstrates the competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities b. Identifies potentially unsafe situations and notifies supervisor c. Completes all employee/patient incident documentation in a thorough and timely manner, as required by facility policy d. Demonstrates complete understanding of established emergency procedures for facility e. Practices infection control and standard precautions as instructed or trained f. Regularly maintains work area and equipment in a pristine manner 5. Demonstrates the safe operation of equipment and machinery and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation 6. Completes appropriate financial management responsibilities a. Provides input regarding equipment and supply needs b. Completes patient charges in accordance with facility procedure c. Demonstrates sound cost containment techniques 7. Performs all other duties as assigned by supervisor 8. Strives to be professional, courteous, helpful and cooperative C. Compliance 1. Adheres to RRSC Standards of Business Conduct 2. Demonstrates the safe operation of equipment and machinery and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation D. Service Satisfaction 1. Communicates patient information to assure confidentiality and continuity of care a. Documents all patient information according to established standards of care, policies and procedures b. Provides a shift report to oncoming personnel which is accurate, concise and pertinent to the patient’s condition and response to care c. Provides pertinent patient information to the physician, family and other members of the multidisciplinary team d. Discusses patient information with other health team members in an appropriate environment e. Documents patient’s/significant other’s response to teaching interventions 2. Interacts with all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees in a mature, responsible manner to ensure a positive and professional facility environment a. Displays a caring and responsive attitude and conducts all activities respecting patient, family and employee rights and expectations b. Maintains confidentiality of all facility and patient information as required by facility policy c. Fosters a positive and professional facility environment by interacting with all persons in a considerate, helpful and courteous manner and by participating as a team member d. Diffuses/resolves conflict by appropriately communicating with those involved e. Accepts constructive criticism and gives suggestions in a professional manner f. Considers age specific needs in communication E. Skill Review Planning and Organization 1. Ensures provision of effective, efficient quality services at the ASC 2. Demonstrates understanding of policies and procedures through active participation in management in-services and meetings, attendance at required in-services (i.e. fire safety, infection control, Hazardous materials, etc.), familiarization with Corporate, Federal, State, Local and other policies applicable to area(s) Financial Management 1. Provides input regarding equipment and supply needs 2. Completes patient charges in accordance with facility procedure 3. Demonstrates sound cost containment techniques Business Relationships 1. Ensures customer satisfaction and other performance criteria are measured and used to enhance services and performance 2. Facilitates employee empowerment, so that the employees can deliver customer service and satisfaction Leadership 1. Utilizes time effectively 2. Completes all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up-to-date information in accordance with established standards 3. Adheres to established surgical ASC safety requirements and procedures to ensure a safe working environment a. Demonstrates the competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities b. Performs all other duties as assigned by Direct Supervisor/Administrator Staff Development and Utilization 1. Provides leadership and assistance to staff a. Enhances relationships through timely and effective information flow between professional staff, vendor partners, contract partners and facility personnel F. Attendance 1. Follows established surgical ASC policies and procedures with regard to attendance a. Maintains attendance according to guidelines and policy established by facility b. Adheres to tardiness policy c. Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established departmental procedures as noted by manager d. Requests scheduled time off according to procedure as noted by supervisor e. Has regular and predictable attendance f. Adheres to ADSC policies and procedures g. Performs other duties as assignedRequirements: Position Requirements Licenses or Certifications: Current licensure to practice in the State of Texas. Successful completion of Basic Cardiac Life Support Course and ACLS. Education, Vocational Training and Experience Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing. Current BLS and ACLS. Computer skills preferred. Experience Minimum of 2 years experiences in PACU, ICU or ER. Skills and Abilities 1. Knowledge and experience in PACU nursing or critical care 2. Effective communication skills 3. Effective positive interpersonal and customer relations skills via telephone and face-to-face interaction 4. Displays positive attitude towards other employees 5. Knowledge and experience in ASC, operating room and ASC nursing care 6. Ability to set priorities 7. Ability to provide direction to others that is clear, concise and promotes efficiency on the unit 8. Ability to communicate well with patients, families, co-workers, etc. 9. Ability to correlate clinical data with patient’s medical and nursing care Environmental Conditions Work is indoors in climate-controlled environment. Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors, blood and bodily fluids that may carry infection, infectious diseases, and chemical and electrical hazards. Occasional exposure to outdoor climate. Physical Requirements Good visual acuity, accurate color vision. Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds, which may require pushing, pulling, and essentially utilizing a full range of body movement. Ability to push a gurney with 150-pound patient on it. Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl. Ability to reach, grasp, use fine finger movement and feel fine sensation to discern temperature, texture, size and shape. Degree of Supervision Provided to Position Minimal. Must be self-directed and able to work independently.
