The Position

            The incumbent is involved in all aspects of the water distribution system.  Candidate will perform locates of water and sewer and any other Town utilities, coordinates work in the right of ways and in Town property. Incumbent will also install and or repair water / sewer lines, install valves, meters, fire hydrants and read meters. Collection of bact “T” sampling and all other miscellaneous tasks as may be assigned by the utilities superintendent or public works director.


Essential Functions

  • Performs locations of Town utilities as directed
  • Utility safety on R.O.W. construction
  • Inspections of newly installed water mains for compliance with standards
  • Inspections for NPDES compliance for the Town surface water systems
  • Investigates water /sewer complaints with homeowner/ commercial accounts
  • Accurately reads meters and records these readings for billing/ responds to turn on/off requests
  • Performs routine maintenance on meters, lines, valves and fire hydrants. Will be expected to perform work on these items in such a way to prevent cross contamination.
  • Flushes all water mains in accordance with existing instructions.
  • Responds to work orders for turn on/offs, answers emergency complaints concerning water services, repairs, and/or assists in the repairs of water system components.
  • Performs routine water complaint investigations and reports outcome to utilities superintendent, repairs water leaks; makes oral and/or written reports regarding meter readings, water usage, and fire hydrants.
  • Will be expected to be able to order parts, inventory parts, and maintain adequate stock of all common use items.
  • Make checks of lift stations if required/ assist with repairs as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor
  • Will be expected to perform collection system maintenance
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have high school diploma or GED
  • Valid Florida driver’s license
  • Must have 1 year experience as a Utility Trainee, or equivalent.
  • Must attain Distribution License within 1 Year


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have a greater knowledge of plumbing, pipe fitting and meter repairs
  • Must have knowledge of water sampling, cross contamination practices to prevent contamination of distribution system.
  • Must be able to read plans and work from them. Locate in the right of ways and town property.
  • Have the ability to build, and repair water distribution system.
  • Must be able to supervise all aspects of water/wastewater repairs and new installations
  • Be knowledgeable of standard practices for distribution construction, including joint restraints, MJ fitting’s, flange fittings, thrust blocks and all other common construction methods.
  • Must be able to read and record meter readings accurately and timely.
  • Be able to report to superintendent written and orally progress reports and recommendations on work performed and work needed.
  • Be able to use our system of ordering, stocking and inventorying parts.
  • Be able to determine type of materials and equipment for jobs assigned in the distribution system.
  • Must be qualified to be on call for all emergencies
