Purpose: The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) Manager will provide essential support to healthcare organizations' Sterile Processing Departments, which play a critical role in perioperative services. This interim leader will temporarily fill client vacancies until a permanent replacement is found and will undertake all manager duties of the SPD as outlined by the facility. This includes supervising all sterilization-related activities, from decontamination to distribution of sterile case carts. The ideal candidate for this role should be proactive and solution-oriented, with a focus on client satisfaction and patient safety. They should possess excellent relationship-building skills, adaptability to new environments, and a willingness to drive positive transformational change.
Primary Goal: The goal of the position is to ensure exceptional patient care by leading Sterile Processing Departments within client facilities through transitions and change. The responsibilities for this role include overseeing SPD operations, personnel management, and implementing customized strategies to overcome challenges and achieve sustainable, positive transformations.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
- Reviews and updates goals, policies, and procedures as needed according to AAMI and AORN standards, prepares operating budgets as required, participates in multidisciplinary quality improvement teams, consults with staff, physicians, and other departments as needed
- Manages staffing patterns with support from OR Leadership, Assistant Nurse Managers, and Charge Nurses in the OR
- Helps healthcare organizations support the mitigation of increased surgical site infections while there is a vacancy in the department
- Oversees and supports daily operations of all activities that relate to the reprocessing of reusable medical supplies and instruments within professional standards and regulations
- Helps to ensure that SPD departments uphold the culture of safety that leadership and surgeons expect
- Assesses site instrument set needs to eliminate IUSS and modify case order
- Reviews instrument set contents, supporting global change in collaboration with the OR staff and surgeons
- Supports the hiring and mentoring of the permanent hospital SPD Manager to continue quantifying instrument needs and comparing to the existing service supply
- Assists with departmental priorities based on the specific needs of individual clients and facilities
- Assists supervisors with current and future storage locations
- Optimizes staff productivity
- Works with the current department structure to determine the organizational chart
- Holds staff accountable to industry standards with defined decontamination standard work and sterilizing protocol
- Standardizes processes between hospital locations ensuring policies align
- Partners with the SPD Educator to make recommendations that provide continued education and improves staff clinical knowledge
- As applicable, partners with each site’s perioperative department to provide services to meet their needs, assessing the workflow with supervisors, and implementing changes as necessary
- Acts as the liaison between OR leadership and physician request for instrumentation to best meet the needs of physician customers and client fiscal responsibility
- Reviews and updates policies as necessary according to AAMI standards
Education & Experience
- Associate degree; Bachelor’s degree, preferred
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a hospital management position
- A minimum of three (3) years as a Sterile Processing Manager
- Knowledge of sterilization and processing equipment
- Knowledge of healthcare logistics, supply chain management, and medical instrument knowledge
- Must be able to meet with contracted and potential clients, developing and consulting on presentations relating to the department’s functions

Licensure & Certifications
- CRCST certification required
- Active certification in sterile processing/central sterile via CBSPD or IAHCSMM required at the time of hire
- Additional certification for CSP SPD Management/Leadership is preferred
Computer Skills
- Must have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; instrument tracking systems and employee management systems
- Must be capable of learning additional software as required
Work Environment
Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast-paced environment with occasional high-pressure or emergent and stressful situations.
